EXPERT TIPS

Expert Tips

Add flavor to these mouthwatering dumplings by stirring 1 teaspoon of a favorite dried herb into the dough.

Dropping the dough onto meat or vegetables in a boiling stew is the best way to ensure perfectly cooked dumplings.

To accurately measure dry ingredients such as Bisquick, spoon into a standard dry-ingredient measuring cup, then level the top with a straight-edge utensil. Do not scoop it or pack it down.

Some fool once said that dumplings were difficult to make. I started making the Bisquick edition at age 10 (50+ years ago) and I've yet to have a failure. Ten minutes simmer - not boil w/o the cover and 10 minutes with the cover - NO PEEKING. Test with a toothpick (should come out clean) and eat. A tiny bit less milk, perhaps less 1 TBS per cup makes a firmer, dryer dumpling. Add a pinch or two of dry herbs if you like. If your dumplings are large, try 11 minutes before testing. Thanks Betty!
