Cranberry Wassail

Cranberry and spices provide flavorful addition to wassail that is ready in 20 minutes. Perfect drink to serve for Christmas.

Ingredients

whole cloves
6
whole allspice
1
bottle (48 oz) cranberry juice cocktail (6 cups)
1/2
cup packed brown sugar
1/2
teaspoon ground nutmeg
1
bottle (750 ml) dry red wine
Orange slices, if desired
Cinnamon sticks, if desired

Directions

  • 1 Tie whole spices in 2 layers of cheesecloth or place in tea ball.
  • 2 In large saucepan or Dutch oven, mix cranberry juice cocktail, brown sugar and nutmeg; add spices. Cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until sugar is dissolved. Reduce heat. Cover; simmer 10 minutes.
  • 3 Stir in wine; cook until thoroughly heated. Remove spices. Serve wassail warm; garnish each glass with orange slice and cinnamon stick.

Expert Tips

Wassail may be stored for 3 days in a covered container in the refrigerator. Reheat over medium heat before serving.
