Prep Time

Total Time

cup butter
cup sugar
cups Cocoa Puffs® cereal
  1. Heat butter in heavy 4-quart saucepan or Dutch oven over medium heat until melted. Stir in sugar (mixture will be very granular). Cook over medium heat, stirring frequently with wooden spoon, 4 to 5 minutes while mixture melts and begins to turn golden (sugar and butter may separate)
  2. Continue cooking, stirring constantly, until mixture is a rich caramel color and no longer granular (mixture still may be separated; do not overcook). Remove from heat to heat-proof surface. Quickly add cereal; mix until cereal is completely coated. Immediately spread on ungreased cookie sheet.
  3. Cool completely; break into clusters. Store in airtight container.

Watch mixture carefully and cook until it is a rich caramel color; if not cooked long enough, the caramel may become grainy when cooled. Remove from heat quickly to prevent burning the caramel.
