Your right about the consistency; I've made stew lots and always felt it was a bit bland and too watery. Now I add two containers of beef broth and about 2-4 cups of water/cornstarch mixure; I add until I get the consistency I want!

I've never made beef stew before, so I went to trusty Betty Crocker, read the happy reviews, and gave it a try. It was easy to put together but I did wonder why the meat wasn't dredged in flour like many recipes I had read. I was concerned about the "gravy" because water doesn't have much flavor, but I was willing to wait for the final product to pass my judgement. I followed the recipe to the "t" but my sauce never got thick. It was grey & watery (& bland). I will say that the stew ingredients had good flavor, and we did eat it (and my husband had seconds), but it was disappointing. I may try it again in the future with beef broth instead of water, and maybe cornstarch instead of the flour/water mixture.

The best beef stew recipe there is. Been making it for years, no need to change a thing. Just basic, delicious beef stew.

Im making this recipe today and instead of doing it on the stove top I'm doing it in the crock pot =) still browned the stew beef in a skillet with a little bit of beef broth, smells amazing! Now I'll just throw everything into the crock and set it on low for about 6 hrs and enjoy an amazing dinner with my fiance and daughter around 5 =)

Making this as I'm typing and my house smells wonderful..and my man just called and said he was starving! I floured the meat, and added ground black pepper and garlic powder before browning it. I also used beef broth instead of water. I have made this before, it's the same as my mom's recipe (sans the green pepper) but as I'm getting older I like things "written down" and was glad to find it here. Thank you for a wonderful website!

Water and flour makes excellent paste, but it's not for thickening food. The flour has to be cooked first if you don't want a pasty taste. The easiest way is to add it to the pot after the meat is browned and stir it well to brown lightly. That's called a roux, and is the classic way to thicken a gravy or sauce. Also, don't use bouillon cubes; they're nothing but salt with a little artificial flavoring. If you want to enhance the flavor, I strongly recommend the Minor's Beef Base. That's the secret of most professional kitchens. No self-respecting professional chef would even let bouillon cubes into his or her kitchen. The vegetables will have a much richer flavor if they are lightly browned before adding to the stew. This step is well worth the added effort. Otherwise, the recipe is okay.

After making this for dinner tonight I had to write a review and tell how delicious this is! I added 4 beef bouillon cubes for a little more flavor. Love it!
