Im making this recipe today and instead of doing it on the stove top I'm doing it in the crock pot =) still browned the stew beef in a skillet with a little bit of beef broth, smells amazing! Now I'll just throw everything into the crock and set it on low for about 6 hrs and enjoy an amazing dinner with my fiance and daughter around 5 =)

Making this as I'm typing and my house smells wonderful..and my man just called and said he was starving! I floured the meat, and added ground black pepper and garlic powder before browning it. I also used beef broth instead of water. I have made this before, it's the same as my mom's recipe (sans the green pepper) but as I'm getting older I like things "written down" and was glad to find it here. Thank you for a wonderful website!

Water and flour makes excellent paste, but it's not for thickening food. The flour has to be cooked first if you don't want a pasty taste. The easiest way is to add it to the pot after the meat is browned and stir it well to brown lightly. That's called a roux, and is the classic way to thicken a gravy or sauce. Also, don't use bouillon cubes; they're nothing but salt with a little artificial flavoring. If you want to enhance the flavor, I strongly recommend the Minor's Beef Base. That's the secret of most professional kitchens. No self-respecting professional chef would even let bouillon cubes into his or her kitchen. The vegetables will have a much richer flavor if they are lightly browned before adding to the stew. This step is well worth the added effort. Otherwise, the recipe is okay.

After making this for dinner tonight I had to write a review and tell how delicious this is! I added 4 beef bouillon cubes for a little more flavor. Love it!

Has anyone tried this in a crock pot? there are just 2 of us in my house and usually the crock pot is perfect.. 2 big portions for each of us. I was at least thinking of doing the meat only in the crock pot since we don't want to use the gas for 2 hours straight (cheap, I know..) Thanks, and happy cooking!

A wonderful dish for a chilly autumn or winter day. I always double the recipe because leftovers are a must, substitute a 12 oz can of V8 juice for part of the water (6 oz if you don't double the recipe), use 1/2 the salt because the juice will make up for it and you can always add more but you can't take it out. My husband and I dislike bell pepper so I omit it and add extra of the other veggies. Enjoy!
