Lift divider, rinse and prepare 2nd cake 6a. pour pink batter in outside ring 6b. pour chocolate batter in center ring 6c. pour white batter in center ring 7. Lift divider, rinse and prepare 3rd cake 7a. pour remainder of chocolate batter in outside ring 7b. pour remainder of white batter in center ring 7c. pour remainder of pink batter in middle ring Bake as directed - Use frosting of your choice between each layer - Decorate the sides and top of layered cake - ...and enjoy the compliments you will get !!

P.S. I made a mistake. Mea culpa... The recipe is right. You divede the flavors in half. There are two rings in each cake pan. You put chocolate, white, chocolate, then alternate. You take the rings out, carefully, before you bake the cake. This is not a new cake. It has been in existence for at least 60 years, if not longer. It is not new.

The cake is chocolate and white, with yellow icing, piped with white icing. The pansy on the top, seems to be a fresh flower. I have no idea why anyone would want to put purple coloring on this cake. It looks very pretty as is. I have two checkerboard cake pan sets; both a round and a square set. The only thing that I can see wrong with this recipe, is that it calls for making one half chocolate and one half white. You need to make it two thirds of one flavor (your choice) and one third the other. Then you alternate them, i.e., chocolate, white, chocolate, or white, chocolate, white. That is how you get the checkerboard appearance. Wilton probably still carries these pans. I hope that this helps.

so the picture doesn't match with the description given. I want to know what type of frosting is being used in the picture and how do you get the purple. Also, what do the divider pans look like and where can you find them?

I have made this cake for many years, except I make it a 4 layer cake and use 2 boxes of mix. If doing for a holiday like 4th of July, Christmas, St Paddys day etc I use 2 white mixes but devide between 2 bowls and color each bowl, red, or green or blue etc. If just doing the chocolate and white I use a box of chocolate and a box of white. This cake is a hit at the company Thanksgiving lunch when a few questioned me on the checkerboard as just seeing a round cake with decorations and not seeing the cut version. As soon as it was cut a light bulb went off and they understood and then asked me how in the world. Of course the ones still scratching there heads were the ones that did not cook.
