Ingredients

Brownie

1: box (1 lb 2.4 oz) Betty Crocker® Original Supreme Premium brownie mix

1/4: cup cherry cola carbonated beverage

1/4: cup vegetable oil

1: egg

Frosting

1/3: cup butter or margarine, softened

2: tablespoons unsweetened cocoa

2 2/3: cups powdered sugar

1/4: cup cherry cola carbonated beverage

16: maraschino cherries, if desired

Directions

1 Heat oven to 350°F (325°F for dark or nonstick pan). Grease bottom only of 8-inch or 9-inch square pan with cooking spray or shortening.
2 In medium bowl, stir brownie mix, pouch of chocolate syrup, 1/4 cup cherry cola, oil and egg until well blended. Spread in pan. Bake 38 to 40 minutes (8-inch square pan), 34 to 37 minutes (9-inch square pan) or until toothpick inserted 2 inches from sides of pan comes out almost clean. Cool completely, about 1 1/2 hours.
3 In large bowl, beat frosting ingredients with electric mixer on medium speed until smooth. Spread evenly over brownies. For brownies, cut into 4 rows by 4 rows. Garnish each with cherry.

We were very disappointed in this recipe. The brownies were good but the BC pouch brownie we buy for $1 is *just* as good if not better. We really dislike frostings that are mostly powdered sugar because that's really all you taste and this one was no exception. The most disappointing thing: there was NO cherry taste at all in the brownies or frosting. =(

I doubled this recipe since I always have a crowd to eat brownies and everyone loved them. I don't notice the cherry cola flavor as being present but they are chewy like old fashioned brownies, not cake like, and I think the cola contributes to that. The frosting is very good and cherry on top is great! The batter is thick and make sure to spread them evenly in well sprayed tray or edges will be thin and overcook. I took mine out with a little batter sticking to the toothpick but pulling away from edges of the cooking pan and they kept the chewy texture for two days and didn't dry out.

I could not taste the cherry flavor in the brownies at all. If I make these again I would use part maraschino cherry juice as other people have suggested. The icing was very good though. I only made half and it was still plenty. It seemed too thick, so I added extra soda which gave it a nice cherry flavor. I think that the carbonation in the soda also gave the icing a nice consistency.
