Do you have extra apples but don’t feel like making a pie? Try this easy-to-make bar with layers of brown sugar and oats surrounding apples and melted caramel.

I would rate these as medium difficult to make. However, learned a few tricks. 1. I added 1/2 cup crushed walnuts to the crust mixture - yum!!!! 2. When melting carmels, do so over hot water as in a double boiler. I added 1/8 cup of whipping cream to thin out the carmels. This takes care of the sticking to the teeth that one review mentioned. It also allows easier pouring. 3. I find that running a spatula or knife around the edges of the pan as soon as you remove it from the oven, loosens the bar mixture and prevents hard build-up on your pan. Loved the idea of placing cut bars in the fridge. Will try that next time. I cut these into 28 bars. Served it to my Life Group. A hit!!!!

I loved these! I didn't have shortening though so I just used more butter...not sure how it affected but they still tasted great. I used the wrapped caramels and melted them in the microwave in a steam cooker bowl thing. So easy! Definately will do this again.

These are wonderful! I added 2 Tbls of water to the caramels just to help with the melting process. I used 4 Granny Smith Apples and see no reason why you couldn't add more if you wanted. Then just increase the flour amount. Delicious!!

Wonderful recipe. I made these on Thursday and everyone loved them.......I used two different kinds of apples. For the caramels, I used the little ones in the baking section and added 2T. water and melted them in the microwave.....worked just fine. Will be making them again..

These are delicious - it doesn't take that long to unwrap the caramels and it's worth it. As one reviewer suggested I waited 15 minutes to cut the bars and they came out fine. (I used a pizza cutter). I did pretty much just drizzle the warm caramel all over the apples - no need to spread. These are great.

These took a while to make and were not worth the effort. The flavor was good, but the baked caramels stick to teeth and could easily pull out a filling! Perhaps caramel ice cream topping might work better. There is no way you can cut a 9x13 pan into 6 x 6 rows and make 36 decent pieces! Makes 24 pieces ok. However, I won't try these again.

YUMMY! I love this recipe, delicious but not too sweet. I used caramel sauce in a jar instead of the candies. I also added some cinnamon to the apple mixture and it turned out great. Will definately make this again.

I made these twice and brought them into school for my classmates to sample. I was being chased down the hall and harassed for weeks because people enjoyed them soooo much! Very yummy and simple...real crowd pleaser!

Wonderful kid-friendly dessert. Made them with the caramel squares which I gave my 7yr old the task of unwrapping. I would recommend not cutting them for about 15 minutes after they are out of the oven. The caramel will still be soft enough to cut, but it won't ooze between the bars and make them look melted. I had no trouble with them falling apart, they transported an hour and fifteen minute drive perfectly! Huge hit at the party - I only neglected to bring vanilla ice cream. A mistake I will not make again!
