Braided and fruit-filled, these shapely coffee cakes are perfect for entertaining or giving as gifts. This delicious recipe is from the award-winning Betty Crocker’s Best Christmas Cookbook.

Does anyone know which cookbook this recipe is in? I would like to replace my MIL's cookbook but need to make sure that this recipe (that she has been making for years) is in it!

This is my 29th Christmas of making these (also with the old recipe, using sour cream instead of buttermilk). I always make 12-20 on the morning of Christmas Eve, and my husband and I spend the afternoon delivering them to friends and family. The old recipe uses a simple powdered sugar glaze: 2 cups powdered sugar and 2 tablespoons water. I don't use the apricots, but double the amount of cherries. Yummm ... These are easy to make ... taste delicious ... are beautiful gifts. Can't be beat!

Iniebauer, I have the original recipe. It uses 2 cups sour cream in place of the butter milk, 1/4 cup butter, and no baking powder. Hope that helps. I have made these as gifts for the last 30 years. sometimes as many as 20 - 25 in a season. I usually make 4 or 5 candy canes from one recipe. It makes them a little smaller, but mostly less bready. My family loves this on christmas morning!

To habaneromama: I remember my mother making this recipe with the sourcream. But the cookbook is gone. Could you tell me how much sourcream?

The recipe says to use the Coffee Cake Glaze, but gives no ingredients. Anyone have the best glaze recipe to put on this? I remember making these over 30 years ago and everyone loving them. I don't know why I stopped making them, but I would love to take one to the grandkids this year!

P.S. re these coffee cakes - I used sour cream in the original recipe, and have never ever used the cinnamon candies. ;)

I have been making this forever, and it's a never-fail smash hit every single time. The most requested filling is the dried apricot/red maraschino cherries, followed very closely by a kind of sweetened cream cheese/maraschino cherry mixture. For Christmas I shape it into either into the candy cane or a wreath, and decorate with red & green maraschino cherries. Other times of year I'll usually use a date/walnut filling, and either shape into a circle or just a "straight" coffee cakes.

This makes a wonderful presentation at a party or dinner! The braiding was very easy although I was nervous about it at first. I did find that the filling leaks a bit, and if you look closely at the picture you can see the filling around the bottom there as well, so just be careful not to make your cuts too far towards the middle of the dough. I also canned pie filling as suggested here. It was delicious, tasted similar to a cherry danish!

I made this as written except I used canned cherry pie filling. It turned out wonderful, moist and sweet. However the next day it dried out quickly, and was covered the whole time. This is definately worth the time if you will be eating it the same day.
