@Susie, the starter should be fed once a week. If you use the starter to make dough, the instructions say to add some flour and sugar back into the starter. If you don't use it, you have to feed the yeast a little sugar so they can continue to live.

Made this bread and it was wonderful. Have a question though. The instructions say to use starter once a week or stir in 1 teaspoon sugar. Do you stir in sugar ONCE or ONCE A WEEK??? Really want to keep this starter going.

I started the starter 3 days ago. it already has that sour smell and has liquid on top the bubbles now. Is it ok to stir it back up or should i just leave it? How long you let your starter sit when you first made it, 7 days seems like a long time.

Came out wonderful. Soft on top and crispy on the sides. Just can't buy sourdough bread in the stores. Been years since I tried to make any glad I started back with this recipe.
