Made these with texas toast and used bacon pieces instead of slices. We did not care for the batter so much. It made it taste more "french toast-y". Will try again w/o batter and maybe mozz cheese instead of provolone.

We just had this for lunch. Yummy! I added dijon mustard to one slice of the bread and also added thin slices of Granny Smith apples to it. We had tomato parmesan soup with it. Great lunch!

I didn't know what "rustic white bread" was so I just bought an unsliced loaf of Italian bread from the bakery at my grocer. I cut it a bit thicker than a piece of white loaf bread, but thinner than Texas toast. I used thick sliced pepper bacon but both my husband and I agree thinner, extra crispy bacon would likely work better, even though it was still delicious. I nearly just buttered the bread instead of making the beer batter, but I will tell you this - DO NOT DO THAT! The batter is AMAZING on this grilled cheese! Easy to make, too! I'll be making this again!

I ended up using thick cut peppered bacon and sourdough bread. Personally, I think it would have been better without the beer batter. One of the slices of bread ended up a bit soggy in the middle.

This is a good easy recipe; even though the calorie count is high. Use it as a "cheat treat". I used Texas Toast; and put 2 slices of provolone and 4-5 pieces of bacon. Ate it with Texas crisper fries and a pasta salad. Thx for the easy dinner recipe!!

My favorite grilled cheese is with bacon and tomato. This was a great grilled cheese. I did add tomato to it. I love the new twist. I would have never thought to batter a grilled cheese. I agree with you Faffs, don't mess with a good thing. They are high in fat and calories, so you just don't eat it all the time.

The recipe is tasty as is, despite the pontificating of the omg it has fat in it naysayers. For those seeking low fat recipes, simply move on to the "healthy choice' categories. Leave the preaching there. No need to rework a perfectly fine recipe, since no one going to have it three times a day every day. EVERYTHING is fine, in moderation
