Directions

  • 1 Heat oven to 375°F. Grease bottom and side of 1 1/2-quart round casserole with shortening. In 10-inch skillet, cook beef over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until brown; drain. Stir in beans, tomato sauce, brown sugar and onion. Pour into casserole; set aside.
  • 2 In medium bowl, stir remaining ingredients until soft dough forms; beat vigorously 20 strokes. On surface dusted with Bisquick mix, gently roll dough in Bisquick to coat. Shape dough into ball; knead about 10 times or until smooth. Pat ball into 7 1/2-inch round or round the size of top of casserole. Place on beef mixture in casserole.
  • 3 Bake uncovered 15 to 20 minutes or until crust is light brown.

Expert Tips

Want an individual casserole for each family member? Divide the beef mixture evenly among 4 greased 10- to 12-ounce casseroles.

For a special treat, cut the dough with a cookie cutter or small, narrow-bladed knife to make jack-o'-lanterns, cats, pumpkins, half-moons, stars or hearts.

simple and tasty, kind of like a thick, sweet chili. i only had a 13x9 baking dish handy and had to double the crust recipe to make it fit. also, i didn't have tomato sauce, so i used a 6 oz can of tomato paste and simply added water until it was a good consistency. i think this actually made my filling thicker, which was really enjoyable.

Very straight-forward recipe that's easy to make and tastes like its picture--which is always a good thing. I also used a different kind of bean (trying to use what was on hand) and it still tasted good. Versatility is good for a mom :) Finally, our family really likes breads and so I doubled the Bisquick mix and it was perfect! Really liked it!
