Reading and understanding the directions will answer all your questions. 1# All you use is 1 piece of parchment for each of the 3 cake pans. It stays there the entire baking time. You are pouring a layer of mix over a cooked layer. Understand? 2# The bottom should not be dry. Doing the math, it cooks a total of 48 minutes. Right there on the back of the cake mix box, it says to cook 8 or 9 inch rounds 43-49 minutes. Also, NYDoris, start with the shortest bake time. Catching when the layer is fully cooked, but not pulling away from the pan. If a layer pulls from the pan, the next layer will seep down the sides. At that point, you can just keep going or you could remove that layer and just have less layers. OR, if not in a rush, cook a layer, cool completely, remove from pan, repeat until done. I hope this clears everything up.

This was a big hit and not nearly as difficult as it looks. A very clever idea. The frosting is a yummy treat.

I made this for Christmas and it was time consuming but well worth it! The frosting went excellent with the cake. I would recommend that if you do plan on making it to read all the directions over and over and all the comments to make sure you have it down. I live at 5400 feet so just added the extra flour that was recommended on the box. I would definitely make this again for a special occasion as it was a delight to look at and delicious!

Made this for Valentines Day party and everybody loved it! First-don't overbake! In my gas oven-9 minutes was perfect. I use a RED VELVET Bakery Emulsion from Lorann Oils.com-I can put it in either a white cake mix or chocolate-easy and delicious. I chose to use a devils food mix with the Red Velvet liquid so it would be more moist. The icing was loved by the grandkids the most! Added fresh raspberries on top for decoration in the shape of a big heart. This will be my "Go To" recipe for Sunday Church luncheons-Thanks Betty!

I made this cake for my fathers birthday and it turned out wonderfully! The cake was very moist and I think the trick to this is to carefully watch the cake as you bake each layer and remove it as soon as it is set. Most of the time 6 minutes was the magic number but some layers took a minute longer. The cake looked very impressive when it was sliced and I will definitely be making it again.

This cake is beautiful but it is very time consuming and the finished product is dry. When I was baking the cake I was nervous about its appearance but it did look just like the photo. The frosting is very good and a good match for the cake but the cake tastes dry. I'm hoping that it gets better as the days pass.

I made this cake for a Christmas party and I found the directions very confusing. Step 6 says, " baking 9-12 minutes PER layer..."etc. Did that mean since I had 4 layers I should be baking cake 36 - 48 minutes ??? I Think it should have said for EACH ADDED Layer bake 9- 12 minutes. I wound up sticking a toothpick into the center of the cake to see when it came out dry. People were impressed by the cake but I was praying I wasn't serving a raw cake! Also while cake center was springy in the center, when I added the next layer it mixed with the layer below. Any suggestions??? I'd like to master this recipe for future events.

I just cut into the cake and am so excited with how well it came out. My cake was 15 layers as I could not fit the final layer of batter in the pan but I am still really happy with the result. I will definitely be making this again and may experiment with different flavors of cake mix. Thanks for a very creative recipe that makes me look like a talented baker!
