Slow-Cooker Tex-Mex Steak and Rice
I tried this recipe last night and was very disappointed with the directions. First off in all my years of cooking I have never just put 'red' meat into a crockpot without browning it first, but I thought ok, BC must know what they're about. So I did not tenderize my round steak and I put it in the crockpot and slow cooked it for the 7 1/2 hours as directed. Added the rest of the ingredients and was pleased with the taste. BUT the steak was dried out and tough. It did not fall apart like it should when tenderized (and pictured). I will go with my own cooking skills in the future when it says to just put it in with out tenderizing or browning first. I've got to say with out browning it, it had this awful smell for the 1st hour or so. That's because you have to cook off the blood first. Never again! BC better review their recipes a little better next time. My rating reflects the recipe directions only. The taste was good, just had to saw through the meat!
