As for the issue of sugar, just don't top them with frosting. I agree that topping a "protein bar" with frosting is a bit counter-intuitive. You could probably even ditch the syrup. Although, 2 TBSP really isn't much, but understandably so for some people.
Pecans and dark chocolate do have redeeming nutritional value.
