Turn ordinary kitchen items into beautiful, natural egg dyes. No special kits required!
When I was a kid, I looked forward to dyeing Easter Eggs all year long. I still do… there’s just something about lowering a pristine, white egg into the cup of dye and watching it transform into a jewel-toned nugget that never fails to make me smile.
This spring, you can add to the magic by making your own natural dyes out of ordinary kitchen items!
The eggs shown above were colored with tea (tan), frozen mixed berries (blue), beet juice (pink), and a combination of onion skins and turmeric (yellow). Just follow these 3 easy steps and you’ll be on your way to dying your own eggs with kitchen scraps.
First, prepare your dyes by bringing your dyeing ingredients to a boil with about one cup of water – you’ll need about a half cup of berries, the skin of two onions plus 1 tablespoon of turmeric, juice from one can of beets, or two black tea bags.
Simmer for 10 minutes, or until the liquid becomes a rich color. Discard any solids and train into whatever you’d like to dye your eggs in - I used a mix of custard cups, ramekins, and coffee cups- and stir in 1 tablespoon of white vinegar.
Allow the dye to cool completely before adding your eggs, or they will end of overcooked!
Add unpeeled hard-cooked eggs to the cups, then sit back and relax while they take on the color of the dye. Plan on letting each egg soak for 15-30 minutes - the longer you leave them, the more intense the final color will be! If the liquid isn’t deep enough to cover the entire egg, turn it over a few times while it dyes.
For fun effects, layer the dyes – an egg that is dyed yellow and then pink will end up green, yellow and pink will look orange. You can also wrap a rubber band around the egg before dying it to create stripes!
To give the eggs a subtle shine, rub them with a towel dipped in a tiny bit of vegetable oil. They’ll glisten like polished river stone!
These eggs are so gorgeous that you’ll want to keep them on display, but make sure to refrigerate them if you plan on eating them!
