Mozzarella-Stuffed Sausage Meatballs

Savory stuffed meatballs start with Italian sausage.

Who doesn’t love meatballs? They’re small, scrumptious spheres of deliciousness typically made with a variety of meats. But this meatball is different because it only uses sausage, specifically sweet Italian sausage that’s chock-full of big bold flavors and herbs, like basil.

A sausage meatball in and of itself is mouthwatering, but we’re elevating it by stuffing each and every one with mozzarella cheese!

If you’re lucky enough to have any left over, the meatballs also make a mean sandwich for lunch the following day. You might want to think about doubling the recipe just so you have some extras.

Here is how you make them. Preheat your oven to 350°F. In a large bowl, combine sausage, egg, bread crumbs, milk, onion, garlic and basil. Mix well.

Spray a rimmed cooking sheet with cooking spray (or line the sheet with a silicone mat). Using a small cookie scooper (approximately 1 tablespoon), scoop out 27 meatballs onto the cooking sheet. Press a small cube of mozzarella into the center of each meatball, making sure to cover the cheese with the sausage mixture.

While the meatballs are baking for 20 minutes, you can prepare a basic tomato sauce and spaghetti for a full meal. The bite-size beauties can also be served with toothpicks in sauce for an incredible appetizer.
