Brussels Sprouts
A member of the cabbage family, these bright green veggies range from 1 to 1 1/2 inches in diameter and resemble tiny cabbage heads. Store sprouts in an airtight bag for just 3 days; otherwise, they’ll have a strong undesirable flavor.
How to Buy
Choose unblemished, bright green sprouts with compact leaves.
How to Prepare
Remove any discolored leaves; cut off stem ends. Wash sprouts; cut large sprouts in half.
How to Cook Conventionally
Boil: Uncovered 8 to 12 minutes or until tender.
Steam: Covered 8 to 12 minutes or until tender.
How to Microwave
Place in 1-quart microwavable casserole; add 2 tablespoons water. Cover. Microwave 5 to 6 minutes or until tender. Let stand 2 minutes; drain.
