  Cobblers, Crisps and More

Don’t you love trips to the apple orchard and berry farm, and the fabulous fruit desserts they inspire? Carry on the baking tradition with these tips for delicious fruit cobblers, crisps, and more:

  • For unsurpassed freshness and flavor, look for locally-grown fruit at groceries, farmers’ markets, roadside stands and at community-supported agriculture (CSA) farms. Frequently, consumer information is paired with fruit displays and suggests which varieties are best for baking, cooking, and eating.
  • Fresh peaches and plums are plentiful in summer; pears appear in late summer and throughout the fall. Fresh apples are found throughout summer and early fall.
  • Fresh berries come into season in mid-summer. They’re terrific by themselves, but also when paired with other fruit in cobblers, crisps, shortcakes and pies.
  • Use an oven-proof baking dish for fruit desserts like crisps and cobblers. For best results, make sure fruit is hot before biscuit topping is added; it will then bake all the way through. Betty Crocker Bisquick® mix is ideal for fruit cobbler topping.
  • Serve fruit cobblers and crisps the same day they’re baked for maximum flavor and quality. They make tasty breakfast items as leftovers, too!
  • In a hurry? Try Betty Crocker Complete Desserts® Old-Fashioned Apple Crisp for an easy and delicious baked fruit dish that comes together before you know it.
