CAN I BAKE IN CERAMIC COFFEE CUPS?

So it's almost Valentines day or so the media is already headed in the direction of the next holiday. The magazines are flirting the hints of love flavored treats, i spot one i think my love would like but "WHAT IS A RAMEKIN?" So i bake and think cooking is an art form given from the gods and then i have to google this thing and find out what it is. QUESTION IS: Can't i just use ceramic coffee cups instead? Has anybody ever baked anything in a coffee cup? How high can i go in the oven? Thank You!

The only mug I know of is Corning Ware brand, which is good up until 350 degree's.  There is an email going around for coffee mug chocolate lover's cake and that is made from scratch, but you also cook in the microwave.  Try google the recipe.

Ooops, Ramekin is a ceramic dish that is usually fluted up the sides.  It is like a coffee cup with no handle.  They sell them at all the superstores.

A ramekin is a single-serving, heatproof, cylindrical dish.  They're made of glass, porcelain or ceramic, usually in a round shape with an exterior ridged surface.  Since ramekins are designed to hold a single serving, they're frequently sold in sets of four, six, or eight.  Traditional ramekins are solid white, round, with a fluted texture covering the outside, and a small lip.  You can find them at a pretty reasonable price in stores like Wal-Mart and Meijer.  You should be extremely cautious about using ceramic coffee cups instead since they can vary radically in temperature stability.  I wouldn't go higher than a 350 degree oven temp for any ceramic mug but even then, you risk them cracking or exploding.  The only way to be sure how much temperature a mug can withstand is if you have access to the manufacturer's spec (i.e. it would be on the box if they came as a set.)

Ramekins are made in 2 sizes, 1/2 cup and 1 cup.  I wouldn't chance putting a mug in the oven.  The microwave "mug cakes" are pretty good.  I prefer the cake mix version over the homemade.

I would suggest only cooking in mugs if you knew they were oven-proof. Look on the bottom of your mugs- do any of them say that? I just did a quick google search on where to fine them... and it looks like many places carry them. Good luck- please let us know what you ended up doing- and how it turned out! :)

Here's a recipe for a microwave brownie that is cooked in a coffee cup.


MICROWAVE CHOCOLATE MUG BROWNIE

This makes a delicious brownie for one in about a minute. I used a 1500 watt microwave. 60 seconds makes a molten center brownie. 75 seconds make a uniformly done brownie. Careful not to overcook.

2 tablespoons vegetable oil
2 tablespoons water
1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 dash salt
4 tablespoons granulated sugar
2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder
4 tablespoons all-purpose flour

In a 12 oz coffee mug, add water, oil and vanilla. Whisk well. Add cocoa powder, whisk well. Add sugar, whisk well. Add flour, whisk well.

Microwave for 60 to 90 seconds. Center should be slightly molten. Careful not to overcook.

Enjoy with a spoon. Careful brownie will be hot.
