Hi Everyone,

This year when my son celebrated his birthday, I decided to make him something different instead of the usual chocolate cake with chocolate frosting. This time I made him a Black Forest Cake frosted with homemade whipped cream. He really loved it, boy it was a hit.

actuallly two of them.  I made a six foot train cake for my son's second birthday.  With track made of red licorice, wheel from oreo cookies, kit kats for the whistle.  Each car was a different color and was for each of the kids. The second cake my husband made, it was a volcano he made from scratch, carved the cake, made the lava, the animals, etc.  It was the biggest hit.  Our son was sad when we had to cut it.

Last week my sister and I had one great big birthday party.  Her daughter and my two boys birthdays are all in April and we had a big Fear Factory Party.  I did not want to do the dirt an worm cakes.  I make both the boys a regurler size then I frosted it with chocolate frosting, choped up oreo for dirt, and put cheap plastic bugs on them.  Then with my niece's cake I used a bunt pan frosted with chocolate frosting, chopped oreos for dirt, put oreos in the middle like potty soil, in the middle I put fake flowers, and then put some plastic bugs around it like lady bugs and bumble bees.  They where so cute and my first cake to make, I have always bought them.

It's been a few years, but I made a chocolate bundt cake, with chocolate frosting.  I decorated the top with teddy grahams standing up.  Used a tiny bit of colored frosting to make them look like they were wearing swimsuits.  Used sticks of gum to serve as diving boards.  Little drink umbrellas for beach umbrellas.  In the center of the cake, I set a bowl of blue jello to look like a swimming pool.  White Lifesavers were 'floating' in the pool of jello.

I believe I seen this cake in a Wilton Cake book.  It was adorable, and now I can't find it, is there any way you could send me a picture?  Thanks Patty

Hi Patty,

As you can see I forget about this site....its been awhile. If your post was referring to my Dinosaur cake, I do not have a scanner to send a picture. I just "traced" a Trex pic from a coloring book in the foreground. I startipped a volcano in the background and then used red gel lava. I used different tips for grass and plants around the Trex and used candy rocks. He really did love dinos, but I guess the play on his name made it for him!!

I usually do star-tip a picture of whatever theme they are having, some better than others. One year the whole party was Ninja Turtles and I thought it turned out well. My son's favorite, however, was from when he was into Dinosaurs. I did a prehistoric scene with a volcano and T. Rex. My son's name is Ross, and the T. Rex was growling..."Happy Birthday RRRRoss!"

I made my son a Barney cake when he was smaller, my mother made him a football field, goal posts and all, yard markers etc. when he got older, It was awesome!!

When my almost 30 year old was small, he was into "The Dukes of Hazzard", so I made him a General Lee car!

Orange frosting, confederate flag (frosting) on top, oreos for wheels.  People still talk about it.  LOL! I used a sheet cake, cut it in half, layered it, and carved the windshield and trunk area.

I usually buy my cakes at the grocery store, but this year, for my son's 5th birthday I made him a horse-shaped cupcake cake.  We were having pony rides and I wanted to stick to the theme.  I did a google search and saw a picture of one online, and was able to copy it.  I thought it was pretty funny looking when it was done, but my husband and lots of the guests thought it looked great.  It took a bit of time to do it, but I think it was fun and was cheaper and cuter than a store bought cake!

I didn't do this, but a friend of mine did it for me. My youngest sister and my youngest son are one year apart but the same date. So she used a Wilton cake pan shaped for a Raggied Ann / Andy cake. She done one half as Ann and the other half as Andy. It was really cute and they loved it. Granna2

I made my son a cupcake, he wanted a giant cupcake. What I did was make a large batch of cup cakes, filled them with whipped cream, iced them and stacked them. Decorating the tops. Crowned off with sparklers and extra long stick candles.  It was a smash and easy to serve

I usually try to make an unique cake each year for my children's birthday party.  One year, my daughter had a non-sleepover slumber and I made a bed complete with sleeping children.  Another year, she had a cooking party and I created a big apron.   I have made school buses,  race tracks,  castles, and spider webs and more.  I think making them is actually more fun for me than the kids!!

This funniest one I made was for my sister-in-law. It was a kitty litter cat. If you are familar with it, it is made in a litter pan with the litter scoop to serve it. To make the cat droppings you heat up tootsie rolls & roll them between your hands. Very discusting looking but had excellent flavor. Sister-in -law would not eat it. It made her gag to cut it.

The best one for my kids was the wedding cakes I did for my daughter Aug. 8, 2009.

I have two sons whose birthdays are a day apart. I made special decorated cakes for their birthdays til they were in their early teens. My two favorites were a dinosaur cake-shaped with square chocolate covered cookies cut on diagonals as spines on the back and candy corn teeth; and a group of small lego shaped cakes in bright primary colors. I've also made Barney, cars, stop signs,  army battlefield scenes and others.

My kids call it "the ultimate birthday cake".  I make a cream cheese pound then slice it and lay it in a springform pan.

Top it with  Oreo icecream, crushed Oreos and the hot fudge.  Repeat the layers, freeze, unmold and ice the outer edges

with whipped cream and top with multiple types of colored candies.  It's the only cake they've wanted  for the last

nine years.
