Living in Germany and still trying to cook ...Help!

Hi

I just got married to my German husband, and we are living in Germany now.  I am still trying to cook American dishes.  There is no cheddar cheese here. or Jimmy Dean sauage.  I love cooking breakfast, and dinner casseroles especially with these two ingredients.

There is pork sausage here that you can buy by 500g. package or in bulk, but I would have to season it myself, and I don't know how to do that.

Does anyone have any ideas I could use for subsitutions?

thanks.

Hello - I, too, am married to a man from Germany - Hamburg.  We live in the Southwest USA, but I still cook a lot of German food for him. When I was younger and lived in Colorado I ate a lot of elk and deer; I ground and made my own sausage - I used onion powder, garlic powder, sage, thyme, salt and black pepper, and if I wanted a little spice to the sausage, I added cayenne powder.  I am not up on cheeses in Germany, other than a lot of Brie (French, however), but you might ask around for a "melting" cheese.  Good luck - you are on the right track - Betty Crocker's website is a great place for getting great answers.

Hello,

Don't know what spices you are able to get hold of in Germany, but you could take the sauage and season with sage, black pepper, some cayanne pepper if you want it spicy.  I like the sage taste.

Have a nice Thanksgiving.

Here is a recipe I have for ground turkey sausage but you can add the spices to ground pork or mix equal parts pork to turkey

Turkey Sausage

1 1/4 lb ground turkey

1 egg white beaten

1/3 cup minced onion or 3 tbsp minced dried onion flakes

1/4 cup ground parsley

1/2 tsp dried marjoram and 1/2 tsp dried sage (or you can substitute 1 tbsp fennel seed)

1 tsp each salt and pepper

Combine all ingredients. Shape into patties or logs. Add a little water to a hot skillet and fry until cooked through. You can freeze the sausage for up to 3 months in tightly wrapped plastic wrap.

• Ground pork: 1 lb.
• Coarse salt: 1/2 tablespoon
• Rubbed sage: 1/2 teaspoon
• Rubbed summer savory: 1/3 teaspoon
• Ground nutmeg: 1/8 teaspoon
• Ground marjoram: 2/3 teaspoon
• Ground black pepper: 1/3 teaspoon

you can also add cayenne to spice it up, start with 1/4 tsp whole and adjust until you find the taste you prefer

You might want to take a look at for a list of sausage seasonings.  I do most of my spice shopping with them and have never been disappointed.  I'm lucky to have a store here but have had gifts shipped and never had a problem.

Are you familiar with eBay? This is just a "last resort" type idea...they have eBay in Germany, you know. Also, since Cheddar is a Scottish invention, that cheese is quite common in Germany (which makes me wonder where you are at in Germany). However, you will often find it only in it's natural state, not the dyed orange form, maybe this is a distraction?

Arron is a cheese you can pretty commonly get (and a pretty good cheddar it is!). I am sure if you do an internet search (try ) you will find quite a few!

Best of luck!!!

Feel free to send me an e-mail at , I don't mind. Those of you seeing this e-mail and thinking about adding it to a spam list - DON'T! I filter and don't look at spam!
Devie19, be sure to add NEED SAUSAGE RECIPE in the subject line, or you may get "stuck in that filter"....LOL!  :)

Seems this site doesn't allow for links...lol...my e-mail address was promptly edited out...it's Matrxlady at cox period net. Hope this get's there. Devie19 as mentioned before, I have strong spam filters on, please send your e-mail by putting "SAUSAGE RECIPE NEEDED" in the subject line, ok. I be glad to dig up those recipes for you, but you will need a good scale that shows grams, as you know an American pound is not a German pound...lol...and you will have to be able to work with American measurements! :)
