What are some of the dishes you prepare from scratch year after year? What is so special about them?
My favorite thing to make from scratch is a Ruby Cake. Most people call it a red velvet cake but my is not a box mix. I use buttermilk in the receipe and the icing is also made from scratch. I make this cake and it doesn't last for long. I feel that some things should not be rushed.
Although my Mom made eventhing from scratch and still dose somethings, potato salad, stuffing, mayonaise cake, cookies & pies are what I remember most. My Mother is now 84 and she dosen't cook much anymore but we still ask for her oatmeal cookies & potato salad and consider it a 'real treat" when for makes them. Granna2

Your Mom is not too much older than I and I too cook 95% from scratch. Puddings and pie fillings are ALWAYS from scratch. Mainly because one gets much more "bang from their buck" and they taste so much better. When I make a banana pudding it would cost a small fortune for the amount I have to make if I used box mixes. Lemon pie from a box always has that awful reconstituted taste. Even though my time is very valuable, because I don't have that much time left, my kids and younger friends and neighbors still congregate in my kitchen to learn how to do things the way "it used to be done". Cooking from scratch from things that have been preserved will become a lost art if the old don't teach the young or if the young are not interested. Oma Shirley
Blackberry jam and homemade biscuits. I remember when I was little the smell would always get me and my siblings out of bed. My Mammie always made it for us. She's been gone awhile and try as I might it's good but it's not hers.
