Homemade Hot Dog Chili

Cans of hot dog chili cost at least $ 1.50 for a 14-oz can.

Here's a recipe that I think is better than canned and cheaper.

Homemade Hot Dog Chili

Cooking time 45-minutes. Makes about 8 cups

1 lb ground beef

1 Tbs bacon grease

6 cups cold water

1/4 cup cornstarch

1/2 cup all purpose flour

8-ounce can tomato sauce

4 Tbs mild chili powder

1 Tbs paprika

1 Tablespoon dried minced onion

2 tsp cumin

1/2 tsp granulated garlic powder

1/4 tsp ground black pepper

1  tsp table salt

1 cup fritos corn chips, crushed

1. Brown the meat with bacon grease in 4-qt dutch oven. When browned, pour off excess grease except for 2 Tablespoons.

2. In a 2-qt mixing bowl, add water. Whisk in cornstarch until fully blended. Whisk in flour until fully blended. Whisk in tomato sauce until fully blended.

3. Stir into the water mixture chili powder, paprika, dried onion, cumin, garlic powder, pepper and salt. Mix well.

4. Add water mixture to meat in dutch oven.

5. Stir in the crushed fritos corn chips.

6. Bring to a boil then reduce to a simmer.

7. Simmer 45-minutes. Stir well and scrape bottom of pot every 5-minutes to prevent burning.

8. Serve as is or blend slightly with hand blender for a smoother chili.

9. Serve over hot dogs, hamburgers, polenta, etc.

This recipe sounds great. I've been looking for a good hotdog  chili recipe. What does the cornchips to for the sauce? Thanks for the recipe.

It adds a kind of corn chip flavor, a little texture and a little more thickening of the sauce. You can leave them out if you don't care for them.

The Frito's corn chips give a unique flavor and texture. I noticed that people like pouring chili in bags for Fritos as a snack, so why not add it to the chili. It mostly disolves and doesn't leave big pieces, but leaves the flavor. This was originally based on Top Secret Weinerschnitzel Hot Dog Chili by Todd Wilbur. I didn' t like the results and tweaked the recipe a lot. His recipe had vinegar, tomato paste and sugar. It was too sweet and I didn't like the vinegar taste. The tomato sauce adds tomato flavor without adding a sweet taste.

Antilope, That looks interesting, I don't care for canned hot dog sauce and usually end up useing canned chili without beans, but I'll try that. A friend of mine makes really good sauce and I ask for the recipe a couple of times, one day his wife heard me and ask,"What recipe?, He uses Manwich", He looked so funnyEmbarrassed and I 'bought rolled laughingBig Smile. I just use 2 times the amount of hambuger and it is good. Granna2
