Community Poll: Do You Compost?

With Earth Day only a week away, I’ve been seriously considering to begin composting. My uncle and aunt had a compost pile when I was growing up and I loved throwing the scraps into the pile!
I currently do not compost. I blame it on the fact that I live in an apartment on the third floor and don’t have space to garden in, so composting seems less than ideal. Knowing I just have a few flower boxes to my name I’m still debating. I realized though you don’t need to have a big space to compost. Here are some of the tips I read: http://www.bettycrocker.com/tips/tipslibrary/tools-equipment/how-to-compost
Holding Units
These low-maintenance units are smaller and good for apartments or smaller homes. They do not require turning. But because of the lack of aeration, the composting process can take 6 months to 2 years.
What a great way to recycle, help the environment and save some cash on mulch for my houseplants. Organic kitchen waste that I am already throwing in the trash can be composted, so I really want to give it a try!
Do Compost:
- All fruit and vegetable waste
- Coffee grounds and tea leaves
- Nut shells
- Stale or moldy bread
- Shrimp shells
- Eggs and egg shells
- Grass clippings, weeds, dry leaves (best shredded)
Do Not Compost:
- Bones
- Meats
- Dairy products
- Any products that contain animal fats (old yogurt is OK)
- Any non-organic materials such as plastics or synthetic fibers
- Invasive or diseased plants
Do you compost? Where? How? Do you have any composting tips for a beginner composter?
Happy Earth Day!
Sincerely, Cate
