Original (1st.) Betty Crocker Cook Book

Hi, This is very interesting to me,Smile. Could you post a picture of the very first B.C. cook book? and what year that was first printed? I have been looking for one, but have seen more then one cover and date. I also seen a picture of one that was titled as the "first picture cook book", is there a difference between the  two?  Thanks, Granna2

1950 Betty Crocker Picture Cook Book

Well the picture is not appearing. Go to Ebay.com and search

for "1950 Betty Crocker Picture Cook Book".

The book has a red cover with white vines

growing out of a vase. The vines are just a

drawing and not a picture. I believe this is

the first hard cover Betty Crocker Picture Cook Book.

An exact reprint copy was issued in 1998.

If you search on Ebay, there is an earlier

Gold color, paper back booklet from Betty Crocker

Baking Cook Book published in the 1940's.

That booklet is about

100 pages.

The next edition was the 1956 Betty Crocker Picture
Cook Book.

The upper left corner of the cover has a black square
that says "Betty Crockers Picture Cook Book".

Under that is a picture with a lattice top cherry pie,
copper pot with ears of corn standing on end in it,
and a cooked turkey on the bottom right. Inside it is
almost the same as the 1950 edition, but they changed
and added a few recipes.

These are both available in ring binder and bound book
bindings.

The third edition is the 1961 Betty Crocker New Picture
Cook Book. It has white, light blue, pink and yellow
squares on the cover with a picture of food in each.
The yellow square in the middle has a pink frosted cake
on a cake stand.

The fourth 1969 edition of Betty Crockers Cook Book
is the famous "pie" cover.
It's a red cover with a circle in the middle.
The circle is divided into pie shapes and each
pie shaped piece has a picture of food. The top right
picture is a white frosted cake.

Antilope, My (84 yr. old) Mother has two of the red ones with the pie shape on the front . The 1st. is a hard backed book ,date:,"sixth printing, 1970, the 2nd. a note book type with the same cover dated:twenty-sixth Printing,1976. as far as I can tell they both have the same recipes, I don't see any extra in the second one. But my Mom's not ready to part with eoither one,Smile

I think both of those are just reprints of the 1969 edition. Betty Crocker issued reprints in the years between major editions. Most of the Betty Crocker Cook Books are available in ring binder and bound book editons. I think the next major edition after the 1969 was in  the late 1970's with a red cover and square pictures on the cover.

The first "Big Red" Cookbook was in 1950. Though, I'm reading this book called Finding Betty Crocker and I didn't realize how active Betty was in giving recipe cards and little booklets away. I would love to get my hands on some of those pre-1950 stuff.

Anyways, If you have a chance to rent this book from your library- I would love to know your thoughts.

Sincerely, Cate
