Here's the recipe for

Amish Friendship Bread

  • 2/3 cup vegetable oil

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 3 eggs

  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract

  • 2 cups Friendship starter

  • 1 1/2 to 2 cups unbleached, all-purpose flour

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon

  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda

  • 2 teaspoons baking powder

  • 1/2 teaspoon salt

Preheat oven to 350°F.

Combine oil, sugar, eggs and vanilla and beat until light.  Add starter and beat until smooth.  Blend dry ingredients together and fold into starter mixture.  Pour into greased bundt pan and bake for 40 to 45 minutes.  Let cool 10 to 20 minutes before turning onto a cooling rack.

Variations:  Just before baking, fold in up to 2 cups chopped nuts, diced apples or applesauce, chocolate chips, or raisins.  For chocolate version, substitute 1/2 cup cocoa for the cinnamon and nutmeg.  For double chocolate, use 1/2 cup cocoa and 1 to 2 cups chocolate chips.  You can also substitute different extracts or flavorings.

AMISH FRIENDSHIP CAKE STARTER

  • 1 cup flour

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 cup milk

Day 1:  In a large bowl, stir ingredients together and allow to sit on counter covered with only a dish towel (do not refrigerate).  On days 2, 3 and 4, stir the mixture.  On day 5, add 1 cup each of flour, sugar and milk; then stir.  On days 6, 7, 8 and 9, stir the mixture.  On day 10, add 1 cup each of flour, sugar and milk; then stir.

The starter is now ready for the Amish Friendship Cake recipe.  You must use the starter within 10 days to avoid the starter turning sour.  You can also pass the starter on to a friend along with the Amish Friendship Cake recipe.

Would someone please tell me how you print a recipe from the Kitchen Conversations?  I'd love the recipes for the different Amish Friendship breads you have all contributed but I don't want to have to write each of them down.  HELP!

BlueZoo, highlight the recipe you want to print (it will turn blue).  Right click anywhere in the blue highlighted area and choose Print.  When the print box comes up, click on Selection in the Page Range section, choose the number of copies you want to print, then click on Print.

When you choose Selection, it will only print what you have highlighted, not everything else on the page.

WHAT IS THE RECIEP FOR THE STARTER FRIENDSHIP BREAD THANKS. VICKEY..

hi Brandy, go to www.recipezarr.com, they have 9 or 13 recipes for Amish starters for different things. I was looking for the recipe for Amish fruit cake and that's were I found the starter and recipe. The fruit cake takes 30 days for the starter, but it is "Great". I love the Friendship breads and cakes. Lots of luck We always called the starter "Herman", don't know why?!? If you don't have a friend to give what you divide to, you can freeze it, just thaw it in the fridge, and then use just like fresh,:-). Lots of luck.

I've had the above recipe 20+ years and love it. Especially at Christmas time because it packs well in my goodie tins that i give out. I bake mine in a bunte cake pan and then sprinkle it with powdered sugar when its cooled and slice it. I too freeze the starters in yogart containers. They're just the right size. Have used the starter from the freezer up to 1 year later and it's still great. Amazing how a recipe gets passed on and on.

friendship bread starterINGREDIENTS (Nutrition)

  • 1 (.25 ounce) package active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup warm water (110 degrees F/45 degrees C)
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour, divided
  • 3 cups white sugar, divided
  • 3 cups milk

DIRECTIONS
  1. In a small bowl, dissolve yeast in water. Let stand 10 minutes. In a 2 quart container glass, plastic or ceramic container, combine 1 cup flour and 1 cup sugar. Mix thoroughly or flour will lump when milk is added. Slowly stir in 1 cup milk and dissolved yeast mixture. Cover loosely and let stand until bubbly. Consider this day 1 of the 10 day cycle. Leave loosely covered at room temperature.
  2. On days 2 thru 4; stir starter with a spoon. Day 5; stir in 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk. Days 6 thru 9; stir only.
  3. Day 10; stir in 1 cup flour, 1 cup sugar and 1 cup milk. Remove 1 cup to make your first bread, give 2 cups to friends along with this recipe, and your favorite Amish Bread recipe. Store the remaining 1 cup starter in a container in the refrigerator, or begin the 10 day process over again (beginning with step 2).

FOOTNOTES

  • Editor's Note
  • Once you have made the starter, you will consider it Day One, and thus ignore step 1 in this recipe and proceed with step 2. You can also freeze this starter in 1 cup measures for later use. Frozen starter will take at least 3 hours at room temperature to thaw before using.
