Message Boards Problems - Report Them Here

Hi Everyone - you may have noticed some issues with our message boards over the past week or so. We have been working hard to upgrade the system and have been having some tech problems. If you are having issues, please post them here so that we can record them. Thanks so much for your patience, and for being part of our community.

Hi Patty!  Yes,  I have been having problems for the last 2 weeks.  I believe it started 2 weekends ago.  That Friday afternoon , I think!  Even last night I couldn't get to my posting page, and it was difficult to get into the message board area.  I'm sure you already know about me, though because I posted some queries on 'Ask Betty Crocker...'.  Rest assured Patty that we all know and understand that even before you're posting today, you've all been working overtime to try to correct the problem and we appreciate it!  One other thing though,  when I would try to click onto a community page or my page, it is sometimes very painfully slow, and appears to get stuck until the error page pops up.  Thank you all for your hard work to make and keep this website as great as it is!!!

Thanks chicagosinger, we appreciate your feedback and your positive attitude! We have uncovered some bugs that we are working on, but don't want to take down the message boards completely while fixing. As you can imagine, a website of this size has a lot of moving parts, changing technologies, etc. and we work hard to keep it up and running. Thanks for being such a valuable part of our community!

Alabama stated in the post that dissapeared:....A recent email virus was sent by someone pretending to be from UPS, saying that they were unable to deliver a package to you. It says to click on the link in the email and when you do, it destroys your hard drive

 Flourman states:..

If anyone ever gets scared of those so-called viruses, don't sweat it. The best programmers can throw at me their best shot and I will defeat them---every time.

To defeat the bad guys all you need to do is to write new 1's and 0's on your drive. Its called format.com. Thats how you rewrite new informatiion over top of your exhisting files . This destroys all data and makes way for new data to be wrote to your drive. Hard drives really never are destroyed unless the bearings freeze and the drive stops rotating. The magnet can become weak causing a slow seek time but, the drive continues to function.

Always have your installation software for your operating systen handy in the event files get corrupted. Reinstall after a complete format and your system will run perfect. Never sweat the bad guys.

Flourman, thanks for the info on corrupted files.  I'm very new to net and am still very green.  I will most definately copy your post and file it.  This is something that always worries me, even though i believe I have a great protection "Norton", I know that it can also happen despite your best efforts!

Flash is used in our video players, and your browser should prompt you if you don't have the current version installed. If you are using an older browser you may want to upgrade to a more updated version. Otherwise the player can be downloaded here:

Thanks and have a great day!

Patty, the only problem I am having is with the reply box. Many times I type my message in WordPad then copy and paste it into the reply box. It pastes just fine, but when I try to add something to it or correct a spelling error it will not let me do it. The cursor will jump to the beginning of the message, not to where I want it. I cannot edit anything after it is pasted.

Many times I use different colors to separate comments directed to different posters or to separate different recipes. The current reply box makes that almost impossible. It will not let me highlight just one recipe to change the color. Until last week, that was never a problem.

The reply box is considerably smaller now, too. It would be nice to have it larger so we can see our whole message without having to scroll up and down before we hit Post.

One other thing I noticed, since last week when I hit Post, it takes me to the top of the page instead of to the post I made.  I didn't used to have to scroll down to the bottom of the page to see what I just posted.  It's not a big deal to scroll down, but it is different now.

Like CS and so many others, I appreciate this message board and all the time and hard work it takes for y'all to maintain it!

Thanks AlabamaCooker - I will pass it on. We appreciate the feedback!

AC are you still having issues with the reply box?

Hi Patty, yes. If I highlight one section to change the font, size or color, then try to highlight another section, it won't let me do that. As soon as I try to hightlight, my cursor jumps to the section I previously highlighted.

And after I click Post, it takes me back to the top of page 1 of that thread, not directly to the post I just made. On the Welcome New Members post, which is 10 pages long now, I have to go to page 5, then click Next, then finally click page 10.....all that just to double check what I just posted. Then if I edit my post, I have to start back at page 1, then 5, then next, then page 10 again. LOL

It would be nice for it to take me directly to my post when I click Post...like it used to.

Another thing that would make it nice for long threads, like the 10 page Welcome post, would be to have an option to go to the last page, instead of just Next.

Thanks again for all the hard work! We do appreciate it!

OK,
I pasted the message above, then highlighted the next to the last paragraph to change the color and font.  It did that just fine, but then I tried to place the cursor on another paragraph and it will not let me do it.  The cursor jumps to the green paragraph and highlights it....no matter where I try to put the cursor.

The only way I could type this was to move the cursor down the page with the arrow keys on the keyboard.

It seems like once you highlight to make a font, color, or size change....that's it! It does not want you to do anything else.  (LOL, I tried to highlight "not" in the last sentence so I could make it bold, but the cursor jumped up to the green paragraph.  I had to use the arrows to get the cursor back down here. LOL)

I hope this makes sense!

Hi Patty,  I tried to do that also.  I wound up having to post a second time.  I felt bad using up all that space.(Hi AC!)  Thanx!

chicagosinger

P.S.-  It's still slipping to the super small font.  I have to use the 3(12pt) font or it will go to the 8, and I haven to do it twice, when I first start typing and then again before I click onto post.

Flourman states:

Ok Patty thanks for the heads up on that but, thats not entirely all there is to it.

When you log in "flash" automatically loads prompting you enter your email address and password.

"AC" was talking about "the text jumps"..ect. Actually its the page thats jumping....Its caused by the flash.

The flash is causing the browser problems when entering and viewing the text. If you can remove the flash on log in it should correct the visualization and text jumping problems.

Give it a go...Flourman

Thanks CS. A old friend of mine,--cousin,.. works for "Norton" and I got a beta version of ghost from him. I ran the program in DOS and I was not impressed at all.

It is a scan program to detect viruses before windows loads. I found no need for this.

Norton has a data base in one of its directorys called "definitions".  This definition directory has a listing of all the known viruses that have been identified by Norton. When you run the scan for viruses the definition listing checks for identical filenames that have been identified by the company. If the scan ID's any filename in its definition directory listing... it is halted and shut down.

Keep your definitions up to date and scan when the update is complete.

Flash is used only in our video player, not anywhere else on the site. The login box, and in other areas are using different technologies - hope that helps!

It looks like flash to me. It has the new transparent background that is found on other sites I have visited. Whatever software it is I believe that the jumping that "AC" talked about is caused by that "new" software. I noticed it right away as soon as I logged in.

Thanks for your insight in this matter. I will be here to assist you in this or any other matter...."if you wish"

Dear flowrman,

I was wondering if I can copy what you said about UPS statement about how to fix the viruses? I think others would like to know about this. Please let me know if I can or not,

Thanks,

Hi Patty,  it's me again, chicagosinger.  Since about 6pm this evening, I noticed that when you click onto the smiley faces, usually underneath the face it say in text, what it stands for.  Now it shows the weird thing that shows up next your text after you place it in your text.  This has been happening everytime I've used it (about 3 X's).  It might be an isolated thing, but I thought you might want to keep an eye on it.  Sorry to bother you guys AGAIN!Embarrassed   Happy Labor Day!
