Ham - Bone In

I would like to purchase a ham with the bone included.  What kind of ham is this referred to?  Do you have recommendations for baking it?

GrannaGail,

A "cook before eating" (bone-in) ham should be baked at 325 degrees F. for 15 to 20 minutes per pound or until the internal temperature reaches 160 degrees.

A fully cooked (bone-in or boneless) ham should be baked at 325 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes per pound or until the internal temperature reaches 140 degress F.

You are probably wanting a "b u t t" end or shank end ham. Just be sure to read the label and see if it is "fully-cooked-ready-to-eat" or "ready-to-cook." Even with the fully cooked hams, most people still heat them first...but it is safe to eat without heating it. The back of the label will have heating or cooking instructions.

A simple mixture of brown sugar, pineapple juice and honey makes a great glaze to brush over the ham during the last hour or so of baking.

GrannaGail, the only other note I have in addition to the others, is that the b u t t ham has less bone than the shank portion, which I prefer, but is usually slightly more expensive per pound.  I sometimes make a quick glaze of orange marmalade mixed with spicey brown mustard, coat the top, then secure in a turkey bag and bake the recommended time on the label.
