Hamburger casarole

Hi, Its me again. My husband keeps asking me to make him "hamburger casarole" for dinner. I tried one time, ten years ago, but he said it wasn't right. He wants the same one his mother used to make. As both of his parents are no longer living, and none of his sisters can remember the recipe, I haven't been able to cook what he says is his favorite from when he was a little boy. All I know about the recipe is that it was in an old cook book that his mother had, circa 1940's-1950's and it had cream of celery soup in it, and he thinks worstershire sause, and of course hamburger. If anyone has this recipe I would be so greatful. I would love to suprise my husband with it for our upcoming anniversary in July. He really misses it. He askes me about once a monh or so if I have found the recipe yet, when I say no he lookes like a sad little boy.Crying I would love to make his anniversary really special. Thanx for reading.

My mom made a hamburger casserole with french style green beans and mashed potatoes on top. We used cream of chicken soup, but you could use cream of celery. You mix the can of soup, one can of green beans (drained) and 1 pound of browned hamburger together on the bottom of a round or square casserole dish, then cover it with the mashed potatoes (real or from the box)...about 1 to 1 1/2 inches all around. Cook it at 350 for about 1/2 hour covered and remove the cover for about 5-10 minutes until it's good and hot. You can put some butter on top of the mashed potatoes before placing it in the oven, but it's not necessary. You could add worchestershire sauce in the hamburger, soup and green bean mixture as well. It's very easy and tastes great!

Does he remember if it had tater tots on top?  If so, the worcestershire and cream of celery would fit that same recipe.

No tater tots. All we can remember is egg noodles, cream of celery soup and wostershire sauce. We're gonna try again this weekend. We're going fishing and we would like to take this casserole with us. Since my hubby was layed off a couple of weeks ago we seem to have some time to spend together and we are loving it, but we would really like to find this recipe. Oh well, we'll come as close as we can. Thanx for all the suggestions.                                      Love Julie, aka cookingjewel

Hi Julie,

Maybe this is what you're looking for. LOL, I'm sorry for the huge fonts. I don't know how to make them smaller. The recipe is from Campbell soups website. Hopefully, this didn't end up posted twice because I was typing it once & accidentially hit the post button.

Take care,

Linda

Hi,

I read this and thought that maybe this might help as it is a favorite of my familys.

  HAMBURG SUPRISE

1 1/2 cup celery cut into bite size pieces                                2 cans Cream Corn                 Preheat oven  350 degrees

1 1/2 cup chopped onion bite size                                        1 cup Bisquick

1 1/2 lbs of 80% lean hamburg cooked and drained               4 tblsp margarine

garlic, salt and pepper to taste                                          1/2 cup green pepper (optional)

1 two quart casserole dish                                                      Milk as needed

Saute celery and onion briefly in two teaspoons of margarine to give a head start in cooking barely tender crisp.  Add 1 1/2 cans of cream corn.  Add hamburg to the mix.  Season with salt, pepper and garlic to taste.  Place all of the ingrediants into 2 quart casserole dish.  Mix Bisquick with milk to a consistency a little looser than for making biscuits to make it easier to spread. Add remaining cream corn.  Spread mix on top of hamburg and vegetable mix.  Bake in oven untill biscuit top is a deep golden brown.  Approximately 30 min.

Mix remaining 2 tblsps of margarine and add garlic to taste.  When casserole is finished baste the top of biscuit with margarine and garlic mix with a brush and let rest for 5 to 10 minutes before serving.

Another favorite around the house is something like a sheppards' Pie.

4 or 5 medium to large size potatoes cut into bite size pieces

1 to 1 1/2 lbs lean ground beef

1 small onion

1 can cream of mushroom soup

Depending on the size of your family you need to adjust this recipe to fit. This can be put in a pie crust, just a pie crust on top or served as is.  It is up to your taste wants and needs to streach the family budget.

Brown hamburg in frypan and drain. Brown potatoes in oil putting in onions towards the end of cooking so as to not over cook them.  Drain cooked potatoes on paper towel or brown bag.  Wipe out pan and add hamburg and potatoes with onions back into pan.  Add mushroom soup with enough water or milk to make suitably moist. Taste and season as needed.  I add a touch of garlic.  Serves 3 to 4 people without crust.

This is comfort food and doesn't look like much in the dish without the crust but is delicious. I usually serve this with a salad, crunchy bread (when not using a crust) and for desert a jello parfait'.  The crunchy bread usually contains less fat than the crust unless you have a heavy hand with the butter.

Both of these recipes can be changed by adding things that go well with them. For instance adding french style green beans to the finished mix in the hamburg and potato casserole or green peppers to the hamburg suprise or any vegetable that you feel would taste good with either.  I suggest you try the recipe as is first to know what you feel would be a flavor you would like to add.
