lasagna tomato sauce flavor?

Is there a traditon for the flavor of lasagna?

Should the tomato sauce for lasagna taste like a pizza sauce or spaghetti sauce?

Is oregano the foremost herb for pizza sauce and basil for spaghetti?

When I was a young girl, my first taste of lasagna was definately a delicious home made pizza sauce.

Welcome to the Message Boards!

I don't know what is "traditional" for lasagna sauce but I can tell you I don't like a strong basil flavor in any of my food.  I prefer either oregano or thyme rather than basil.  (I also have a white sauce I use for a seafood lasagna instead of red sauce that I really like.)  My belief is if you like the way it tastes that's the way you should make it!  This is the number one reason I like to cook from scratch - I also hate sugar in my tomatoe sauces and the premade sauces without sugar (or high fructose corn sugar) and strong basil flavor are difficult to find.

Dear, dear Eemma,

Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions.  You have freed me to simply enjoy the flavors I like best.

That's my favorite part of cooking!  I take a recipe and adjust it for my(and my families) tastes and needs.  A hint I will pass on is I always make note of the changes I make so I can recreate the dish later - or use it as another starting point.

Wow, Eemma, everyone should take note on that hint!  I cannot begin to tell you how many times I have made changes to a recipe, or just threw something together and it turned our great....went to make it the next time and had not written it down and my memory failed me.  I jot those changes and new recipes down right away now.  Thanks for pointing that out for others and a good reminder for those of us that already do it.
