Substitute for graham crackers in graham cracker pie crust

Hello all,

I live in Germany and graham crackers are not available here. I would like to try some other cookie/cracker as a substitute, but before I begin experimenting and wasting food, I hope your Kitchen will be able to provide some pointers as to the structural/substantial properties I need to look for. For a specific example, if I find a cookie that has the right taste but is not soft like a graham cracker, but thin and brittle, what could I add to compensate? Or, is there any way to make a graham cracker crust "from scratch" if you don't have the crackers?

Thank you so much,

-blue

i dont know how to make graham crackers i am sorry , but i have used vanilla waffers  or a butter cookie in place of them at times, i just put them in a blender or a food prossesser to make the crumbs, and use the same amount, as you would of the graham crackers, it just depends on what you like. there even some crumb crusts made out of oreo cookies to if you like the dark chocolate or maybe even the animal crackers they are pretty dry to. hope i could help you.  but they are all very good.

 hello,

I found the recpie for graham crackers

1 teaspoon baking soda                              1 cup sugar                                  5-1/2 to 6 cups graham flour
1 cup milk                                                  2 eggs beaten                              1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1 cup butter or margarine                            1/2 teaspoon salt

Dissolve  baking soda in  milk and set aside. Cream butter and sugar. Add beaten  eggs and mix well. Add baking soda mixture, graham flour, salt and baking powder. Mixture should resemble stiff batter, almost stiff enough to roll. Divide batter into 3 portions. On greased cookie sheets spread each portion and press smooth to a 1/4- inch thickness. prick with fork.  Bake in a 400 degree oven 12 to 15 minutes. cut in squares while warm.  cool makes about 6 dozen graham crackers.

Hi.  You may want to find a cookie similar to the flavor of graham crackers- something light with a honey flavor.  Do they have  Keebler cookies?  They come in all different flavors, I think they have one called grahams, which have a honey graham cracker flavor.  These cookies are the one's with the little elf and the cozy treehouse if you have seen a commercial on TV.  Otherwise, your first reply is a good one, vanilla wafter or a butter cookie, ie shortbread cookies.  Depending on the flavor of the pie you can also use other cookies.  I have made grasshopper pie before, it is green and minty and uses a black crust from oreos or Keebler mint cookies.  I don't think it is a problem if they are thin and hard because you should crush them or put them in a blender and then use butter and the ground cookies to press on bottom of pie pan.  If it is a no bake pie you may want bake it in oven for 20 - 30 minutes at 325 F. degrees to crisp it and make crust firm.  With cheesecake the graham cracker crust is usually soft/no bake.   Good Luck!  Leandra

Dear blueberlin,

My son lives in Finland right now and he has the same issue.  When I visited him,  I wanted to make his favorite dessert, Cheesecake, but there were no graham crackers to be found.   So I found some cookies that are vanilla flavored sugar cookies and ground those in his food processor to make crumbs,  then added butter and sugar to make a crust.

I also tried some chocolate wafer cookies and did the same thing and they made a good "chocolate cookie crust".

Also,  maybe if you have some ginger cookie you can also grind those up and make a crust with butter and sugar.

I hope this helps you,  Good luck on your search..
