I have a Betty Crocker Cookbook from 1957 and I wouldn't change a thing in it. It has ALL my favorite recipes, shall I name a few??? "Black Midnight Cake", Hollandaise Sauce, Apple Dumplings."Cedric's Casserile" honestly, the book is held together w/duck tape, but I refuse to part with it.
Those old books are the best, aren't they? I would love for you to post some of those old recipes here!
Well, although I'm not really new to the computer, I'm new to posting recipes.
I agree Betty Crocker has the BEST recipes. I look for recipes in Betty Crocker cookbooks first. I have several I would never part with.
My mother had one. I have a later version that does not have all the favorite recipes of hers. I've been looking for a penuche cake and icing recipe that was in this book. I can find icings but no cake recipes. I would so very much appreciate the recipe. I have searched everywhere for it..

Hi Susan: Just talked to Linda in Customer Service about your post. Here are the recipes you are looking for! Hope your mom has a great 70th birthday! Sincerely, Cate
Black Midnight Cake Betty Crocker 1956 Cookbook In the 1956 Cookbook, the cake is pictured with White Mountain Frosting drizzled with Fudge Sundae Sauce (recipes below). It also mentions that it is delicious with a creamy fudge frosting. I have also included a fudge frosting below. 2/3 cup shortening 1 2/3 cups sugar 3 eggs 2 1/4 cups cake flour 2/3 cup cocoa 1/4 teaspoon baking powder 1 1/4 teaspoons baking soda 1 teaspoon salt 1 1/4 cups water 1 teaspoon vanilla Heat oven to 350°. Grease and flour rectangular pan, 13x9x2 inches, or 2 round pans, 9x1 1/2 inches or 3 round pans, 8x1 1/2 inches. Beat shortening , sugar and eggs on high speed for 5 minutes, scraping bowl occasionally. Combine flour, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt. Mix flour mixture in alternately with water and vanilla. Bake until wooden pick inserted in center comes out clean, rounds 30 to 35 minutes, rectangle 40-45 minutes; cool. White Mountain Frosting 1/2 cup sugar 1/4 cup light corn syrup 2 tablespoons water 2 egg whites (1/4 cup) 1 teaspoon vanilla Mix sugar, corn syrup and water in small saucepan. Cover; heat to rolling boil over medium heat. Uncover; boil rapidly to 242° on candy thermometer (or until small amount of mixture dropped into very cold water forms a firm ball that holds its shape until pressed). As mixture boils, beat egg whites until stiff peaks form. Pour hot syrup very slowly in a thin stream into egg whites, beating constantly on medium speed. Beat on high speed until stiff peaks form. Stir in vanilla during last minute of beating. Fills and frosts two 8- or 9-inch layers or frosts a 13x9-inch cake. Fudge Sundae Sauce 6 oz. package semi-sweet chocolate chips 2 tablespoons light corn syrup 3 tablespoons cream 1 tablespoon butter Combine in saucepan and stir over low heat until smooth and creamy. Fudge Frosting 1/2 cup granulated sugar 2 tablespoons cocoa 1/4 cup milk 2 tablespoons margarine or butter 1 tablespoon light corn syrup Dash of salt 1/2 to 3/4 cup powdered sugar 1/2 teaspoon vanilla Mix granulated sugar and cocoa in 1‑quart saucepan. Stir in milk, margarine, corn syrup and salt. Heat to boiling, stirring frequently. Boil 3 minutes, stirring occasionally; cool. Beat in powdered sugar and vanilla.
