Discontinued Tuna Helper Cold "salad"

Several years ago, Tuna Helper had a cold pasta salad mix that was fantastic.  Some stores stopped carrying it, and then the one store that I could depend on also no longer sold this Tuna Helper.  I've seen something similar, but it is not the same taste.  As with most cold pasta salads, the directions called for you to boil the pasta, with dehydrated bits of peas, and onions (?).  Then, once the spiral noodles were cooled under cold water, the can of tuna was added, along with the seasoning packet (that I mixed with mayo and milk, per directions on the box).  For years, I have searched for a recipe that would replicate this, but to no avail.  Not only was this a good staple to serve in the summer, but my kids loved it.  Also, it "kept well"--not drying out, or losing flavor.  If I cannot get Betty Crocker to re-introduce this dinner, then I would appreciate input from anyone who remembers this dish and was more successful than I in recreating it.  Smile

Hi,

I found one that is pretty close to it.

Italian Tuna Pasta Salad

http://www.recipezaar.com/Italian-Tuna-Pasta-Salad-301519

1 (6 1/2 ounce) can tuna, drained

1 lb cooked spiral shaped pasta

1/2 medium onion, minced

1 cup frozen peas, cooked (I like canned peas, drained)

1 cup Miracle Whip (I use mayonnaise)

1 (5/8 ounce) packet Italian salad dressing mix

Milk

In a large bowl combine Miracle Whip dressing and packet of Italian dressing mix. If mixture is too thick, thin with some milk until desired consistency.

Add minced onion, tuna, and peas. Mix well.

Add cooked pasta.

Toss to coat pasta and chill in the refrigerator.

I'm going to try this recipe this week.  This salad was an old favorite of mine also, but have not been able to re-create it successfully.

This cold Tuna Helper meal is the only one of the "Helper" meals that I liked.  I use to be able to get it at Meijers and would buy every box I could get my hands on as it was the only store that carried it.  As stated in one of the previous emails, this was a perfect summer meal and I have been trying to duplicate it for years.  I actually just tried again today but it just wasn't the same.  I wish the people at Betty Crocker would reconsider and bring this delicious meal back.

I am extremely interested in this thread! I'd like the recipe if they don't want to bring this back. It was very good and I miss it dearly!

I too loved the cold Tuna Helper. I'd give anything to eat it again!

I loved this product. It was a favorite of everyone in the family. I can't wait to try the recipe, but wouldn't it be great if Betty Crocker would reintroduce it?

I am so glad that I am not the only person to remember this pasta salad. I live in the midwest and I recall that Tuna Helper Cold Pasta Salad went off the market about 17 years ago. I was truly heartbroken! I have yet to understand why companies stop the production of GREAT PRODUCTS. I absolutely agree 100%....Betty Crocker should re-introduce its cold pasta salad. Let's all get together and write Betty Crocker and tell them how we feel.

I too, loved this product. It was my favorite. I actually called the company and asked them about it and they said it was discontinued and there were no plans to bring it back. I was so disappointed! But thanks to the person who posted the recipe.

I LOVED this tuna helper I use to make it all the time. I noticed they no longer sold it my usual super market so I tried others to no avail. I logged on to their web site to find out they discontinued it." It was not a big seller" they said. I think they are full of ..., But like any thing thats good always gets canned.

HOW TO WE GET BC TO BRING THIS BACK!!!!

9/20/2010 9:28 AM

H!  Did you ever make the recipe below?  I don't think the Italian seasoning was the "secret ingredient"  If BC would let us know what was in their packet; we could reinvent same.  My family LOVED IT.  Kinda like Kaft with the Jalapeno cheese roll; my spinach madeline has never tasted the same!  Thanks

Hello pocomom, they have something called suddley salad that sounds alot like that. I have tried the ranch one and it is really good. It is also a BC product. I hope this helps.
