Sugar cookie recipe

I'm having my nieces and nephew over to make Halloween cookies. Does anyone have a no-fail cut-out sugar cookie dough?

I'd like a recipe for the holidays, too. My son LOVES sugar cookies and has been begging me to make them for two years. I want something very simple, easy to cut and decorate. (I think the love is all in the sprinkles for my son). I want something that makes lots of batches, so we can throw out the "ugly" ones and start over.

This is a recipe my sister-in-law perfected many years ago.  It makes a great sugar cookie for cut outs as it is a sturdy dough, holds its shape when baked, and the left over pieces can be re-rolled over and over again without affecting quality.  I particularly like it because it is not super sweet on its own as most likely you'll be putting icing or decorations on top.

 ANN'S SUGAR COOKIES

1/2     CUP BUTTER

1/2     CUP SUGAR

2        EGGS

1       TEASPOON VANILLA

2       TEASPOONS BAKING POWDER

2 3/4  CUPS FLOUR

Cream butter and sugar.  Add eggs and vanilla.  Mix together baking powder and flour and mix into creamed mixture.  Do NOT chill (many sugar cookies call for chilling - this one will be too stiff if chilled)  Roll to desired thickness (not too thin - in fact a thicker cookie - is great for kids to decorate as it is quite sturdy) and cut into shapes.  Bake in 400 degree oven for about 9 - 11 minutes or until lightly browned.

Big Smile Thank you for the recipe post for the sugar cookies! I tried it and loved the taste and texture. It stays well in the freezer too, a problem I always had before on the time frame.

The freezer ziplocks work great for that! Have a great summer!

I use this one that I obtained from an Amish woman who lives near us.  Chill dough for about an hour after mixing.  Dough also freezes well in large ziplocs.

1 c butter, softened

1 c veg oil

1 c gran sugar

1 c powdered sugar

1 T vanilla or 1 T almond extract, depending on which flavor you prefer

2 large eggs

1 t salt

cream together and gradually stir in 4 c all-purpose flour.  chill.

I have been making Christmas cookies with the kids since my daughter was 2- now 31. Simple not too sweet but so much fun. The cookie is a cutter cookie, kind of like spice but the sweetness is in the frosting. We eat the cookies while we decorate.

1 C oleo( I use Parkay)

2 C Sugar

3 Eggs

1 t soda

1 t nutmeg

2 t cream of tartar

1 t cinnamon

1 T milk.

2-4 C Flour ( all purpose)

Mix 2 cups of flour in first and add until the dough is firm but not too stiff. Roll dough on floured board and cut-out cookies. Left-over dough can be put back in the bowl and mixed in and re-rolled. Bake in 400 degree oven until light brown. Let cool, and then let the kids decorate with icing and sprinkles. I use a basic powered sugar, milk and vanilla frosting. Make it thick enough it won't drip of the end of the knife.  Sprinkles will stick and it will dry and firm up. Never had one turned down yet- Have fun!! Oh --I  NEVER let adults in when we make cookies- they always want to stop the mess which is part of the fun.

This may sound like I'm cheating but I use Betty's Sugar cookie mix!!! I have for several years now, and no one is the wiser. It is so much easier in my book to just have to add a few ingredients than to measure out all of them. The package has directions for "rolled cut out" cookies so it takes the guess work out of trying to compensate for all the rolling and rerolling. Doing it this way saves time, and leaves more time for decorating the cookies (my favorite part). I usually make about 6-8 dozen sugar cookies and I like to  make sure that each cookie is decorated differently. I also use the Betty Crocker peanut butter cookies for the "Peanut Butter Kisses". I get rave reviews from my family at Christmas , and my friends have dubbed my the cookie queen, and request certain cookies year round!!

THANKS BETTY!!!!

Last night I bought 2 packages of sugar cookies mix.  The package had cut out cookies on the front.  Theree were NO directions anywhere on the package for roll-out cookies.    I called the number on the package and was told what changes to make - BUT if I had not realized that the directions on the package weren't correct for what I was making I would have been pretty upset.  There was no mention of cut out cookies anywhere onthe package other than the picture on the front labeled serving suggestion.

katherine, would you tell us what changes they said to make?  Thanks!

I BUY THE DRY PACKAGE AND FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS AT THE BOTTOM WHERE IT SAYS TO REDUCE BUTTER TO 1/3 AND ADD EXTRA FLOUR TO THE BATCH.  I USE THIS ALL THE TIME WITH MY 2 & 3 YEAR OLD GRANDCHILDREN.  YOU TO USE EXTRA FLOUR FOR CUT OUTS AND ROLLING.  YOU CAN ADD EXTRA FLOUR TO ALMOST EVERY RECIPE.
