Cooking & Baking with Kids

From breakfast to dinner and lunchboxes to kid-friendly snacks. How do you keep it fun for kids in the kitchen?

New ideas and recipes for Picky Eaters!

Hi I'm new to the site, I have 2 young children (7 & 5) who are VERY picky eaters (if they could live off of peanut butter sandwiches for the rest of their lives they would! Smile ) I am also looking for recipes that my husband and I would enjoy and good family meals. I work 2 jobs so I am only home 2-3 weeknights and weekends so make ahead dishes would be great!

I love to bake with my kids and they love to help out, so kid friendly recipes are a +!

Thank you for your ideas in advance!

Happy Cooking/Baking!Big Smile

Hi jen1711!

Although there are worse things they would demand besides peanut butter they need to branch out or they will not get the nutrients they need to thrive.  Do your kids eat chicken, fish, or beef at all?  Any veggies?  Do they like salsa?  You could do Salsa Chicken in the slow cooker.  These are tasty and easy.  Place chicken breasts (boneless, skinless) in the bottom of the slow cooker and top with a jar of your favorite salsa.  Cook on low 8-10 hours.  Done.  Serve like fajitas with tortillas, cheese, sour cream, etc.  You can also put bell pepper strips in the slow cooker with the salsa.  Mmm.  Good.

Do your kids like pasta?  Cheese?  Make mac & cheese and "hide" veggies in it.  Broccoli tastes great when added to pasta and light alfredo sauce.  Spaghetti and meat sauce is always a winner too.  Brown a pound of ground beef with a chopped onion and add a can or jar of spaghetti sauce when the burger is cooked thoroughly.  Serve over your favorite cooked pasta.

Whatever you do, get them to try new foods and don't cook separate meals for your children and the adults in your household.  You are not a short-order cook.  Although I can cook multiple meals for my family I refuse to.  Because of this my son is an adventurous eater.  I hope these suggestions give you a place to start.

Hi Jen

My grandkids are also very picky eaters--When they come here I try things like creamed chicken and noodles but accidently

put frozen mixed veggies or broccoli in it.

With practice you can hide alot of veggies in pizza and taco's.

I like to do make your own salad sometimes.  You put out a bowl of mixed greens then all fresh veggies you can think of   along with cheese and bacon bits .  They have to put 4-5 things on their salad  then use a sweet red dressing to keep them happy.

At grandma's you have to take 2 bites of whatever is served --only then can you reply you do not care for it.

Half the battle is just finding a way to get them to try it  sometimes presentation has alot to do with it.

Did you ever put your p-butter on celery then put a couple raisins on it?  It works!

Try to make mealtime fun instead of stressful and you have won half the battle.

Remember your winning ways--you will need them again when you have grands!  Enjoy .
