Italian Shells and Cheese

My young daughter was recently diagonsed with Celiac disease, so we are sticking to a Gluten Free diet.  One thing she really misses is Hamburger Helper's Italian Shells and Cheese.  Do you know if we use Gluten free noodles, can we still use the flavor packet?

Hi NicRed!

There is wheat flour in the sauce packet so I would not use it.  You should be able to make your own gluten-free version with a little experimentation.  I almost never use any of the "Helpers" anyway because of the sodium content (sorry Betty).  You should be able to find suitable GF recipes for baked pastas that will be similar to this product.  Gluten-free does not need to be flavor-free.  I hope this info is helpful for you.  Have a great day!

Hi, @NicRed! Welcome to the community! Even if you substitute the noodles, the sauce will not be gluten free. However, we have plenty of gluten free recipes for you and your daughter to try out! www.bettycrocker.com/.../gluten-free I hope this helps!

Welcome to the Message Boards!

I found this very site about making your own versions of Hamburger helpers.  One of the recipes lower on the page is how to make Italian Shells and Cheese.  http://chickensintheroad.com/cooking/homemade-hamburger-helper/

Let us know how it turns out for you if you decide to try some of them.
