Moonlighting
by Heidi at Betty Crocker  2/6/2009 10:47:00 AM

My niece, Greta, recently turned four. For her birthday celebration she chose a pajama-party theme and requested that we all show up wearing our PJs. A note at the bottom of our invitation stated: “Greta says: `If you don’t wear pajamas to bed, borrow some!'”

Once our whole family arrived, Greta seemed stunned that we had all followed her instructions—even Grandpa who, at the onset, wasn’t so sure he would comply. As we remarked on (and poked fun at) each others’ get-ups, Greta gleefully remarked, “I picked a good party!”

To go along with the pajama-party theme, my sister baked a cake and decorated it with a moon. She also made cupcakes and inserted little stars on toothpicks to match.

The following recipe would have fit the theme as well.

Moon and Star Cupcakes
1 box (1 lb 2.25 oz) yellow cake mix with pudding
2 containers (1 lb each) creamy white frosting
Blue paste or gel food color
White edible glitter, decorator sugar crystals or candy sprinkles
Large yellow gumdrops
Large white gumdrops

1. Bake Yellow Cake as directed for muffin cups to make 24 cupcakes. Tint creamy white frosting with food color to make blue. Frost cupcakes. Sprinkle with edible glitter.

2. To make moons and stars, on piece of waxed paper, flatten gumdrops with rolling pin until 1 7/8 inches in diameter (sprinkle with sugar to keep from sticking). From yellow gumdrops, cut out crescent shapes with small sharp knife or small cookie cutter. From white gumdrops, cut out star shapes. Place on cupcake, inserting toothpick if needed to prop up.
