These hoagie-style sandwiches start with a loaf of crusty Italian bread. The bread is split and filled with layers of cheese, deli meats and a mixture of chopped olives, celery, garlic, capers, olive oil and vinegar.
Here is our version—a ...

I just returned from a girls-only family trip that celebrated a milestone birthday for my mom. My sisters and nieces took mom on a cruise. It was a pleasure and a delight to see everyone and to enjoy their company in such a relaxed atmosphere. Cruises are also well known for the constant availability of food (my five year old niece and her two year old sister discovered room service and loved it). Combining entertainment and food one afternoon, we found ourselves at a formal tea. It was one of the highlights of my trip.
All the treat...

I have been resisting turning on the air conditioning in the day, which also means that I have been resisting turning on the oven, since my kitchen really warms up when it is on. Instead, I have been using our slow cooker.
My husband had a group of friends over for dinner last night, so I used the slow cooker to cook for a crowd. On the menu was Italian Beef Sandwiches. If you have never had Italian beef, it is chuck roast cooked long and low in liquid, with giardiniera (spicy Italian pickled vegetables), and then shredded and served on a crusty roll with provolone cheese.

As a food professional, I’m constantly trying to keep up with and predict food trends. Here’s one that I’m seeing everywhere. Banh Mi sandwiches are a new take on sub or hoagie sandwiches. They are made with baguette French bread or French rolls and filled with meatballs or layers of cold, sliced meats with lots of fresh fresh veggies ...

I used to live in a condo with a refrigerator that needed to be shimmed so that it was level enough for the door to close. If you happened to slam the door too hard, the shims would slide out and the door wouldn’t close. If I was in a hurry, I’d take a kitchen chair and prop the door closed. We never got around to upgrading the fridge until we listed the condo with a real estate agent. If only there had been some incentive.
