The barrage of commercials for weight loss systems, exercise equipment and healthy foods has begun. While New Year’s Eve leaves another occasion for indulgence, it is also an apropos time to reflect on what might be called healthy indulgence. Let’s face it, diets don’t work. The human mind doesn’t like a sense of deprivation, and when a person tries to change ingrained behaviors, stress often overcomes the effort to change and the original situation gets worse (think, losing fifteen pounds, but gaining back twenty). It’s hard to talk about a new year without bringing up resolutions.
I admire all the people who resolve to eat better, lose weight and exercise more. Considering how picky I am, to cut out—or even limit—the few foods I like would almost certainly mean disaster, but I figure it can’t hurt to try and work in a few more fresh fruits and vegetables. (Or can it? I broke out in hives after eating a high-protein candy bar as a kid. Really.)
