Tonight we are having some guests over for a Mediterranean feast.  I am making Ina Garten’s grilled butterflied leg of lamb.   We are serving olives, hummus and tabbouleh, and a variety of salads.  Last night I made a huge batch of pita bread for the buffet.  If you’ve never made pita bread before, it is actually very easy.  The ingredients are simple and probably on hand in your pantry: water, flour, salt, vegetable oil, sugar and yeast.  This is my favorite recipe, ...

Making Israeli Pickles

I was a part of a cooking event last week on Yom HaAtzmaut, which is Israeli Independence Day.   The celebration often features Israeli food—think of eating all-American foods like hot dogs and apple pie on July Fourth—such as falafel, pita, hummus, and Israeli salad.  The group I happened to be working with made Israeli pickles.  The pickles are small and sour, made in brine and very different from kosher dill pickles.  Here is a great blog post on making Israeli pickles.
