Heirloom Fruits and Vegetables

I am getting excited to see the beginnings of plants sprout in my garden beds.  One of the reasons that I am so excited is that I started and used some heirloom vegetable seeds.  “Heirloom” as it applies to seeds or plants just means growing varieties that have been grown at earlier times, basically “old fashioned” varieties that have gone out of fashion, perhaps because they require extra tending or are not so pretty.  I like to cook with heirloom fruits and vegetables because they are so different looking.  If you’ve ever seen some heirloom tomatoes, they can be deep purple, pink, and even striped.  Here is a picture of a wa...

How Does Your Garden Grow?

Tomorrow I am headed to a garden and patio show at the civic arena in St. Paul.  I have decided that this week I am going to plan out what I want in the way of garden plants and flowers this year. I only had a few plants last year, since we moved into our new house in mid-summer, really past the time when I could put plants in the ground and successfully gather a harvest. I am hoping to create a raised vegetable garden this year.  I would rather construct than dig, and this will allow me to control the soil that I grow in.  You never do quite know what lurks around neighborhoods ...
