Eyes on the Prize…A Blue Ribbon for Cake

It is about that time to enter State Fair baking competitions.  I definitely want to win a ribbon this year, so I have been at work tinkering with different cake recipes.  Whenever I need to develop a recipe, I like to think about different trends and tastes that are of the moment, and then think about what I like to eat.  I have been on a cheery kick recently, using fresh and dried cherries in baked goods and salads, and knew that I wanted to incorporate them into the cake I am developing.  I have been playing...

A Tribute to Women

Without warning, my mother died of a massive heart attack 23 years ago.  As devastating as it was to lose her, our family realized very quickly that women  die of heart disease, sometimes at a very young age.  We are often so busy taking care of our kids, husbands, friends and extended-family that we may neglect our own health.  It's important for women to realize the need to take care of the one person that has an impact on all these folks, and that's us.
