I promised to share my results with making French macarons (cookies) at home in a previous post. I’m trying to make authentic (and delicious) macarons and that's not so easy. Trust me.
First of all, you have to know what you are looking for. For each macaron cookie, you need to use two merin...

I just read Jill’s blog about cupcakes and I agree, they are still hot! You can buy or make cupcakes for any occasion, including weddings. In fact, Kristen (our Assistant Food Editor) made cupcakes for her sister’s wedding and you can find the recipes for them in an upcoming (Aprill/May 2010) Betty Crocker supermarket magazine.
But did you know that cupcakes may be in jeopardy of being the most popular sweet treat? &ldquo...

Valentine’s Day is on Sunday so it’s not too early to start baking those special cookies. I have a couple of favorites—ones I used to bake and send with son Jason to his Montessori preschool. I always called them "Heart Transplants" which I always thought was more clever than Valentine Rolled Cookies. ...

I feel for the East Coast, even though I live in Minnesota. They have many, many inches on the ground already with several more on the way. In fact, the amount of snowfall there is historic. My sister and her husband live outside of Washington, DC and they are astounded by the amount of snow. My sister is a teacher, and between snowdays and President’s Day weekend, she is not headed into school until next Tuesday. My brother-in-law is a professional photographer and his snapshots of the snow are...

I am a big fan of hostess gifts—flowers, wine or little treats are my favorites to give for casual get togethers. When invited to someone’s home for more formal meal, a hostess gift is customary. I never expect them, but am delighted when I receive one. The point of a gift is to show appreciation for a host’s thoughtfulness and to “give back” an experience that the host can enjoy later. My favorite things to give are homemade muesli or granola, a book or a plant. My favorite hostess gift that I have ever received was a drawing made by a 4 year old tucked into a frame. Of course it is displayed in a place of prominence in my...

I love cookies. I really do. It is a simple pleasure, and one I like to indulge. I like to experiment and find new recipes. I especially like to get cookies that I hear others sing high praise for. The Minnesota State Fair has a beloved cookie vendor called Sweet Martha's that people love. I heard about it from just about everyone I met when I moved to Minnesota a couple summers ago. I even heard about it on the message boards at Chow.com, a foodie website where users share food experiences. My husband was set on getting some Sweet Martha's cookies, which, I should add, are sold in buckets....

That’s a lot of cookies, and they’ve all come from the initiative of Jeanette Cram and her “crumbs,” a corps of volunteer of bakers and helpers. Why did they bake all those cookies? To send to soldiers serving on the front lines in Iraq and Afghanistan.
Through the Treat The Troops program, Cram has created a nationwide network to fulfill cookie requests made by and for deployed American soldiers living on the fronts in Iraq and Afghanistan. Treat The Troops’ Mission Statement explains that “‘...

Cooking is a novel and fun way to celebrate a birthday. Cooking parties are appropriate for children ages 2 to teen, and can be scaled appropriately so kids can enjoy a hands-on experience. Children as young as two could decorate cookies with adult support. Children as young as four can make cookies from a mix with adult leading them through the steps. Older elementary-age children can follow an adult’s directions. Tweens can make cookies with an adult’s supervision.
The key to a successful kids cooking activity is preparation, so the entire process of cooking is controlled and kids can have a fun experience in a safe environmen...

With most schools still on break until next week, at this point parents could probably use some inspired ideas to keep kids happy and occupied. There are a multitude of activities for kids and families like roller skating or going to an indoor water park. But these activities can cost a lot. Stuffing teddy bears at the mall or playing games at an arcade is fun for maybe one day of winter break, but done repeatedly these activities can break the bank.
A fun alternative is getting kids active in the kitchen. Cooking and baking appeals to toddlers and teens, and it can create memories as meaningful as any that cost many times more money. Who knows?...
