My husband has a group of friends and colleagues who get together at our house every month to discuss politics, philosophy and other lofty subjects. Since it is his gathering, he has been clear that he likes to take care of the arrangements—making food to serve and clutter-busting to make sure our house looks presentable—rather than task me with more chores.
Except this week…I bailed him out. He texted me that he would be stuck at work indefinitely, but guests would arrive in an hour. On my way home from work, I stopped at the butcher for brats and charcoal and then at the bakery for rolls. Easy.

A few times a year I will pull out my pressure cooker, or, actually, to be more accurate, my husband’s pressure cooker. He particularly admired a corned beef that a friend and co-worker made for a potluck using a pressure cooker, and that co-worker gave us a pressure cooker (and the recipe) as a wedding gift.
With St. Patrick’s Day this week, my husband was in the mood for corned beef, so out came the slow cooker. I admit that I am a bit of a milquetoast when it comes to using a pressure cooker.
