They “met” when Avis sent a letter to Julia as a response to one Julia had sent to Avis’ husband (Bernard DeVoto) about...

A friend sent this to me:
I saw this in a magazine (Town and Country, December 2009) yesterday - the editor was writing about a holiday lunch she had with Julia Child. She sang this re-write of a Christmas classic to Julia. I thought you would enjoy. On the 12th day of Christmas Miss Julia made for me...• Twelve chocolate mousses • Eleven poires Hélène-ing • Ten tartes tatin-ing • Nine veaux blanquette-ing • Eight lambs a stewing • Seven ducks l'orange-ing • Six geese pâté-ing • Five crèmes brûlées •...

In a previous blog, I shared a list of 20 cookbooks that every cook should have. The list is a good one but one omission on the list in my opinion, is the Betty Crocker (big red) cookbook...

A friend and her little ones are members of their local children’s museum in Arizona. They love to go there and participate in events of all kinds, including hands-on food projects. They are coming to visit me soon, and I cannot wait to take them to my favorite food-related museum, the Mill City Museum in Minneapolis. Calling itself “the best smelling museum ever created,” the actual experience corroborates their claim. While the history of flour milling in the Midwest may not seem like a riveting topic, it is because it connects history, geography and food. Why does it smell so goo...

About this time of the year, I begin to plan how I will spend my vacation days for the rest of the year. (I'm actually on vacation right now and Heidi is posting this for me. I'll tell you all about it when I return.) One of my favorite vacations was one I took to the South of France where I attended a week-long cooking class in Julia Childs' home--the one she and her husband Paul built so they could live near Julia's very best friend, Simone Beck. Kathie Alex runs the cooking school called, Cooking With Friends in France which is a culinary immersion program that features cooking classes, a market tour, cheese ripening cave and butcher shop tours, classes w...

My refrigerator drawer was bursting with apples after a visit to an orchard in Bayfield, Wisconsin. I wanted to use some of the apples in a dessert last weekend and remembered my favorite recipe from French class, La Tarte Normande, which is basically an apple pie with custard.
