Birthday Cake Memories
by jillbcooks  8/5/2010 10:01:00 PM

Today is my birthday, and that absolutely puts me in a cake kind of mood.  We are actually celebrating my birthday on Saturday.  I don’t know exactly what my dear husband has planned, but I was given the gentle directive “dress fancy” and was assured that there will be cake.  I got lots of fun prezzies, including a subscription to a cooking magazine and a gift certificate to a cooking store.  Does my family know me or what?

Enough digression!  This post promised cake memories.  When it comes to birthday cakes, my taste runs purist: white or yellow cake with stiff, sugary white buttercream.  My first cake, and maybe my most favorite birthday cake ever, was in the shape of Donald Duck.  The pictures that document the occasion show me with blue and white frosting fully cheek to cheek across my face.  My mom was not big on baking birthday cakes—especially in the dog days of August—and often got them from a local bakery.  She would ask for basket-weave decoration around the sides or elaborate ruffles and string-work, and she would always ask for multiple roses.  Our family tradition was to buy more cake than we needed and to eat it for breakfast the next day.

I will report back on Saturday about my cake.  In the meantime, here are my faves from BettyCrocker.com.  Who wouldn’t want one of these?

Dinosaur Cake

Pink Castle Cake

Butterfly Cake

Chocolate Checkerboard Cake

Chocolate Turtle Cake

I remember one birthday when my younger son turned 1 yrs.old and we had a party for him. We ate spaghetti and then had cake and ice cream. We had 1 small cake for him and 1 big one for the rest of us. We put the small one in front of him and boy he really dug into the cake he had it everywhere all over him from head to toe. Boy it was a big mess to clean up between him and the highchair and the floor.

When I was little it would have had to have been the ice cream cake! Usually from Baskin Robbins with mint chocolate chip inside. Second was a homemade cake, any flavor, with homemade buttercream icing. Now, it would be red velvet with cream cheese icing!
