Happy Boxing Day
by jillbcooks  12/26/2010 2:00:00 PM

I like the holidays because they are a way to remember and explore cultural heritage.  Even within my own family, the difference between my parents’ backgrounds led to an interesting upbringing with diverse traditions.  My father’s background is Italian, and the food traditions of Italy showed up in our Christmas Eve meal.  None of us like fish well enough to do the Feast of the Seven Fishes, but in acknowledgement of it, we do make seven courses, all featuring pasta and vegetables. Christmas Day is usually “traditional American” food, but the day after Christmas, Boxing Day, is when we celebrate my mother’s family’s side, who originally hailed from Quebec, Canada. I grew up in the United States, as my mom moved here when she married my father, so since Boxing Day is observed in Canada, we try to do something a bit special, and for my family, that always means food.

This year our Canadian feast, which we ate for lunch/brunch, included tourtière (a ground beef and pork pie, sort of like Shepherd's Pie), maple syrup pie (a brown sugar and maple pie), Canadian Bacon Quiche and Nanaimo Bars.

Happy Boxing Day to you!  What are your family food traditions?
