My older sister is probably the greatest mom I know. She has two beautiful kids, who are, incidentally, the best nieces in the world! I marvel at the amount of work it takes to care for wee ones. I can see how it could become an all consuming job. My sis has the wise sense to declare a kid-free zone for important mommy relaxation time: bunco night.
In case you aren’t familiar with bunco, it is a parlor game that has made a comeback in recent years. It is a group game played using dice in multiple rounds. The winner of the most rounds wins a prize.
My sister’s bunco club rotates hosting responsibilities, so she ends up hosting a couple times a year. Their bunco parties are usually themed, and the themes for bunco are limited only by creativity. The theme usually influences menu choice and prizes. My sister is known for her super fun themes. Her previous bunco party theme was “Wacky, Tacky Christmas,” complete with tacky Christmas decorations, funny Christmas music and palate tempting pleasers like Cheese in a Can.
Last month she hosted another bunco party, this one "Retro Housewife" theme. Guests were greeted at the door with retro aprons and costume pearls. My sister wore a vintage dress, apron and heels, and styled her hair and make up to be classic 1950s housewife. She served retro desserts to her guests, and gave classic Betty Crocker cookbooks as door prizes. As you can imagine, her guests loved it.

Enjoy these classic desserts:
Lemon Chiffon Cake
Cookies ‘n Cream Torte
Chocolate-Cherry Cola Cake
