No wonder Jill's recipes are so easy. She once owned a business that specialized in teaching kids to cook & bake.

Memorable Birthday Cake Photos
by jillbcooks  5/28/2009 8:24:00 AM

My nieces live far away, too far for me to attend all their birthday parties.  So, when they come visit me, I like to have a little birthday party for them, even if I am many months late or early.  My sister lets me indulge in this and knows that the cake, prezzies and treats are as much for me as for them.  We threw a Dora The Explorer party the last time they were in town, with party hats, cute plates and napkins, and, of course, a cake.  My niece dug into the cake with her fingers and ended up with swirls of pink frosting around her mouth.  They are visiting me this summer, so I am already thinking about how we will celebrate.

There is something about cake--birthday cake especially--that is just happy inducing.  This new photo gallery of Candid Cake Moments proves this.  Kids are all smiles, with most of them covered in cake.  You can upload photos of your special cake moments to share with the Betty Crocker community.  I especially love this picture, since it is exactly how I feel about cake.

If you haven’t heard of “smash cakes” they are a really fun idea.  A “smash cake” is a small cake made especially for the birthday child, so he or she can get their hands and face into the sweet stuff without spreading germs to other party guests.  This fun blog entry shows off a couple beautiful “smash cakes” for very cute twins.

The most joy I ever saw over a cake was a few years ago.  At that time, I had a business giving cooking lessons for kids, and I often gave cooking birthday parties for clients.  One mom called me to book a party, but explained that her daughter had several food allergies and intolerances, including eggs and milk.  As we talked, she told me that she was not planning on having a cake, since her daughter was so allergic, and that her daughter actually never had a birthday cake before.  I asked her to let me do some research, and get back to her with ideas.  As I thought, there were many egg-free and dairy-free options for cake, and I proposed a cupcake decorating party.  In the middle of the party, I noticed her mom off in the far corner of their great room, as I decorated cupcakes with a dozen little girls.  The mom had tears in her eyes because she saw how happy her daughter was as she decorated a cupcake that she could actually eat.
