I made a batch of Betty Crocker Blueberry Muffins last night, the ones that come with the can of real blueberries. They are easy to make and have simple directions, but I added an important first step: tearing off the Box Top and adding it to the envelope in my kitchen junk drawer. When the envelope gets pretty full, I tuck it into my husband’s lunchbox and send it off to work with him, since he is an administrator at a terrific school in St. Paul.

If you have kids, you probably know about the Box Tops for Education program. Basically, schools can redeem 10 cent box top coupons and participate in some affiliate purchasing programs to earn money for school projects. This week the topic of school budget cuts has been in the news where I live. As a former middle school and high school teacher myself, I understand how essential adequate school funding is, and that having access to resources can make the difference between good and great school experiences. Even if you don't have school age children, saving Box Tops and giving them to someone who can use them is a helpful and totally free act of kindness.

- As the school year draws to a close, it is a great time for:
- sending in any Box Tops you've saved to your neighborhood school.
- asking school administrators to put reminders about Box Tops in school newsletters, especially any sent over the summer.
- setting goals for next year: how many Box Tops would you like to redeem? What new programs or equipment needs funding?
- asking community partners like churches, synagogues, gyms, and libraries to help you collect Box Tops.
- enlisting kids to make really cool and artistic collection boxes for each classroom and common areas in the school (directions available here)
- shop using the Box Top Marketplace to earn extra funds for your school
- ask family members and neighbors to save Box Tops
- find out who the coordinator is for your school and volunteer to help
- read more tips from parents and educators on saving Box Tops through the summer months
- share this blog post with others in your school community and even link to it in your school's next PTO newsletter
